Just beyond the city centre are the impressive Venetian walls. Great views but some paths to access them are overgrown and from the smell used as public toilets. If you cans a clear way up they are worth visiting.

If you like the work of Nikos Kazantzakis you should come here. It's simple, but that's what it makes so appropriate.

When in Crete a visit to Heraklion is nice. The Venetian Walls and fortress are nice to visit, but the musea (archeological, historical and that of Kazantzakis) are in my view more interesting. Worth while to see.

you can't see the whole place if you don't walk it - prefer a late afternoon time to visit and explore the whole place.
