The Historical Museum of Crete presents a comprehensive view of Cretan history from early Christian times to the present day. It was founded in 1953 by the Society of Cretan Historical Studies, which had been established two years earlier. The museum is housed in a two-storey neoclassical building, which was constructed in 1903 on the site of an earlier mansion belonging to the Kalokerinos family. The second building, designed by K. Tsandirakis, was clearly influenced by morphological features of the earlier one, and was later listed as a historical monument. The new museum extension to the west constituted an attempt to combine traditional and modern architecture. The original goal of those founding the Historical Museum of Crete was to collect and preserve valuable archaeological, ethnographic and historical material deriving from the medieval and modern periods in Cretan history. The process of enriching the collections, extending exhibition space and redefining the museum's aims has never ceased. Prolific research and publishing activity, the organisation of temporary exhibitions, educational programmes and the use of audiovisual media all form part of the modern educational role adopted by the Historical Museum of Crete over time. The same approach also includes the gradual re-organisation of the collections on display so as to appeal to a wider range of visitors, thus offering them the opportunity to understand the many facets of historical development on Crete from early Byzantine times to the present day.

We visited here back in October 2016 and it was a cloudy day when we visited Heraklion. We intended to go for the Archaeological Museum; when it started raining and so we opted for the Historical Museum which was nearby. Being very fond of history I know a little about Crete in the antiquity but I hadn't a clue what... More

This was a very well laid out museum covering the sweep of the history of this old town. All the mediums for explaining what happened and when were. Some of the religious items were gorgeous. The building was small but itbwas bursting with information. The staff were clearly devoted to their job.

Small but informative museum on history of Crete. We didn't use the audio guide, but the panels on the wall are offer plenty of narrative. The interactive model of Heraklion in 1645 is enlightening and helpful for situating yourself - discovering the history in the contemporary setting. Two paintings by El Greco; a collection of icons, and remains from the... More

This has a well presented display of the history of Crete right through the ages from ancient through Byzantine, Venetian, Ottoman, modern Greek until the end of WW2. The only museum in town to treat the battle against Germany to 1945. A lot of thought and expense has gone into the displays with a proud presentation of Crete's fighters for... More

After walking down the seafront I came across this museum. The €5 entrance fee was more than worth it. The museum tells the entire story of Crete, and what a story it is. I spent around an hour and a half wandering around this small but well stocked museum. If you have an hour or two between sunning yourself on... More

We loved this. The early Byzantine collection is excellent, and the ikons are superb. Don't miss the Second World War material, which is incredibly moving and well told in people's own voices. And the shop has some. Extraordinary memoirs in Greek and English. Definitely worth a visit.

Cretan history from early Christian era onwards. Delightful engaging walk through history with displays, video, and wonderful collections of Byzantine artifacts, fragments of wall paintings, icons and relics. History on display and explained in English up to second World War. I alway like the Ethnographic passageways and rooms. It offers a glimpse into life and lifestyle in the past.
