when you know the story or you have read victorias hislops book the island and then you visit this place you are overthrilled to what was happening there, a community of lebrocy that helped each other so much that despite being a prison when released upon vaccination discovery nobody wanted to leave!!,

Former leprosy colony till the mid fifties ,became a famous attraction in Crete because of the mixed styles of the constructions. It's mainly venetian.Very small, it takes about one hour to see it and there are departures from Plaka and from Elounda. It gets lighted at night on weekends and that ir really beautiful. For me the best view is... More

This is a very unique experience. Getting to sail there and then explore is fantastic. When going, be sure to turn left as you enter towards the gift shop. Going this way first will enable you to read about what you are looking at before exploring the grounds.

The trip took best part of the day but the highlight was most certainly the visit to Spinalonga. It was quite humbling being able to view the authentic location that affected so many during tumultuous times. Many of the buildings are intact which adds to the emotional connection the traveler experiences. Really worth a visit and not only for the... More

You should definitely visit this island. The most important fact is that it used to be a Hansen's Disease (Leper) colony. I highly recommend it.

Very interesting but check the boat times. We just missed one and had to wait half an hour for the next. Also check where the boat is going we almost ended up in Plaka rather than Elounda.

Well worth a visit to learn about the history if that sort of thing interests you... but of course this is Crete and everywhere is history!

Went becaue had read the Victoria Hislop book the previous visit to Crete. Well worth it, and the boat trip is pretty amazing if a bit windy too. We went from Plaka, but you can go from lots of places on the lake.

This is a fascinating visit. The information is a little dusty and old fashioned but it is an amazing place with great views and gives a snapshot into various points in times that the island saw. But get there as early as you can as it was heaving once the various 'cruise' ships turn up.

The 10€ boat trip and then 4€ entrance fee was worth it I feel. You needed longer than an hour to explore, we had researched the island before visiting, so knew a little before we arrived. You need to be pretty steady on your feet, wear good shoes if you want to explore. Unfortunately when we visited there was no... More
