We didn’t know the monastery was closed, but was pleasantly surprised to be allowed in to walk though to see it from the outside. Beyond the gates the views over the coast. There is a hike you can do which gives sweeping and breathtaking views.

Katholiko Beach, located in Crete, is a hidden gem that offers a truly remarkable experience for nature lovers and those seeking a tranquil escape. With its awe-inspiring scenery and rich historical significance, this beach is definitely worth a visit.
Getting to Katholiko Beach requires a bit of an adventure. It is tucked away in a secluded cove and can be accessed via a scenic hiking trail. The journey itself is part of the charm, as you'll be surrounded by breathtaking landscapes and lush vegetation. The trail takes you through rugged terrain and ancient ruins, adding an element of exploration to your visit.
One of the best things about Katholiko Beach is that it is relatively untouched by mass tourism. As a result, the beach maintains its pristine beauty and serene atmosphere. The crystal-clear turquoise waters invite you to take a refreshing dip, and the soft golden sand is perfect for lounging and sunbathing. It's an idyllic spot for relaxation and unwinding.
Travel time to Katholiko Beach can vary depending on your starting point. If you're staying in Chania, it typically takes around 45 minutes to an hour to reach the beach by car. The drive itself is quite scenic, offering glimpses of the stunning Cretan landscape along the way. Alternatively, you can opt for a guided tour or arrange transportation to ensure a hassle-free journey.
In terms of access, it's important to note that reaching Katholiko Beach requires a moderate level of physical fitness. The hiking trail can be steep and uneven in some sections, so wearing comfortable shoes and bringing plenty of water is recommended. However, the effort is well worth it, as you'll be rewarded with the beauty and tranquility of the beach once you arrive.
While there is no entrance fee to access Katholiko Beach, it's important to be mindful of the surrounding environment and respect its natural preservation. Remember to take any trash with you and leave only footprints behind to help maintain the beach's pristine condition.
In conclusion, Katholiko Beach in Crete is a true hidden gem that offers a unique and rewarding experience. Its secluded location, natural beauty, and historical significance make it a must-visit destination. Just be prepared for a bit of adventure and make sure to respect the environment during your visit.

We arrived at 9:30 am. Paid €2.50 per person to a very kind ticket collector. He told us we can now visit the monastery. This hadn’t been possible back in 2016 when we hiked the trail down to the sea. A lovely path leads to the monastery where no photos inside are allowed and coverings are provided. Shorts are considered offensive. Bring a shawl or wrap. It’s a smaller version of Agia Triada and just as lovely. A monk opened a door and a bunch of cats followed him out - breakfast time. He was chuckling. We had a wander and another monk motioned us to the church and we entered. Smaller but designed the same as Agia Triada and totally covered with detailed paintings. Upon exiting the church the same monk brought a plate of cakes to us and we happily took a piece each. We had a lengthy conversation in English with him regarding the monastery. And to to our great surprise - inside the monastery were two very clean toilets to use! Amazing. Lots of renovations going on there. Please be aware of the opening hours of the monastery - 9 am to noon and 5 pm to 7 pm but trail is opened during the other hours. The hike isn’t difficult generally. Bring water. Try to go early in the day. Please do not leave any rubbish. A very special place no matter your belief system.

Simple, beautiful monastery high in the mountain 10 miles from Chania airport. A rocky drive up to the carpark, small entry fee then delightful garden walk to the church itself. Atmospheric courtyard and popped in to hear beautiful chanting by monks. Iconography inside lovely. Then descend the gorge past the abandoned church in the cliff face, onward, down to crystal clear sea and rocky cove. Fabulous walk, and challenging walk back up, in 35deg heat.Cri Cri in regular attendance going down and up the gorge.

It is a short drive from Agias Triadas and the walk in from the parking lot is pretty, but don’t be late because they strictly adhere to the closing times listed. We were less than five minutes late but could not gain entry.

The hike is really special. I have experienced nothing like this before. It is a somewhat demanding hike but with good shoes, a cap and drinking water in your backpack, you will be fine.

A nice walk with interesting churches, chapels, a cave and a small herbor at the end of the gorge. Take enough water with you in high summer.

An absolutely beautiful hike that has incredible views along the way. This magnificent Monastery (the last one on the trail) is one that you won't want to miss. Wear good hiking shoes as the way is rocky. The monastery at the top was not open to visitors at the time we were there but no matter as there was plenty to enjoy on the trail and at the two ruins.

I lived in the Chania area many years ago and hiked the Gouverneto Monastery hike many times. I returned to Chania in October 2019 and did the hike again. It is still so amazing and beautiful. In fact, they have provided an easy and aesthetically pleasing walk from the parking lot. The views for the entire hike down to the sea are spectacular with goats, religious artifacts, prayer and monk areas, and more. Anyone visiting Crete should do this hike.
