Very beautiful scenery. A must-visit place for families and hikers altogether. Requires at least a day of your holidays.

Location Western Kreta (Crete)
60 kilometers in length, from west to the east and 38 from north to south occupy most of the Chania and part of Rethymnon perfectures.
The White Mountains, or Lefka Ori, or even Madares, as called by locals, deriving from the ancient word "madaros" that means deserted - barren!
How better one could describe this huge massif, the largest on the island and its highest summit of Pachnes (2.453 m).
The heart of this imposing range includes the Mountain Desert, where more than fifty peaks named Sori (piles), reminding of cones, exceed the altitude of 2.000 m. Dolines, reminding of upturned cones are formed at the foot of Sori peaks. This creepy and haunting landscape is a unique geological formation in the entire northern hemisphere.
Hiking in the White Mountains requires fitness, experience and a good sense of orientation.

We saw these mountains in winter when they were covered in snow. They are awesome in their majestic beauty. We had read the Cretan Runner which describes the life of a runner ( usually a shepherd) in World War 2 in the Resistance . The runner would go from the mountains to the coast in all conditions to take messages to out wit the Germans who took terrible retribution on the village of any fighter found . It is truly a story of bravery and reslilance and seeing the mountains made their suffering all the more real.

If you've just come to Crete for the beach package holiday, then you'll probably not appreciate this but if you want to experience all the richly varied stunning landscapes that Crete has to offer, the White Mountains are a great experience. We drove up here on two occasions on our last trip, once to Omalos when doing the Samaria Gorge and another to Sfakion. The scenery is magnificent, you'll may be lucky to spot an eagle and some kri-kri (not on the main roads though). There are lots of hairpin bends, or switchbacks and the road isn't great in places, but if this worries you, there are plenty of tours to see the White Mountains and the villages. It is entirely worth it, unless of course you are just a beach person.

Our flat had an unobstructed view to The White Mountains. It was amazing how their colour changed. We also had some great trips driving through them. Definitely a highlight for us.

My wife and I (ages 63 and 68) climbed this mountain with our guide as part of a 7 day hiking tour with Trekking Hellas. It takes 3 hours up and the same down. You ascend and descend about 800m and travel 5k each way.
My. Gigolos is part of the White Mountains in Western Crete.
The track has several switchbacks. The track condition is very rocky and there are parts where you may need both arms and legs to climb over rocks. Good walking boots would be advisable. Walking poles are helpful for your knees on the descent.
The trail is quite well marked and begins at the entrance of the Samaria Gorge.
The views from the top are stunning and include seeing the sea on both sides of the island.
It is a very rewarding hike.

This is probably our favorite area in Crete. The mountains are very impressive and pelnty of fine walks and good swims are there to take for dynamic visitors. Not to many people in September.

My last hikes in the White Mountains in May 2015 were unfortunately impeded by snow. The major summits were inaccessible. Nevertheless I had some very beautiful, albeit exhausting, hikes in the Western part (Strifomadi, Melindaou). I'll be back in a year or two to walk through the moon-like landscape of the Madares. Highly recommended.

Mountains are very much part of the Cretan landscape and the White mountain range is very dramatic and imposing, and snow ridges clearly visible from afar

We are looking to walk to gorge in June 2016. But would also like to spend time in the wider national park, cycling, walking, and 1 or 2 beach days. Where would you recommend staying?
