Quite a significant site for the island and yet again not much information available. As I've found in other sites there is a little map of the site but nothing to give you any context so I ended up checking wiki for info. Only a few euros to enter and quite uneven underfoot as you have a small uphill walk... More

if you like your history then a trip to Lato is a must. This ancient town was built as a fortress of sorts in a mountain pass about 5BC. Parts of the town, the temple, agora etc are easy to see. We were amazed to be charged just two euros to enter and we stayed for a couple of hours.... More

Lato is an ancient town of the Doric period, around 5 BCE. The Dorians were Iron Age people, unlike the Bronze Age Minoans, and the contrast between Lato and Minoan villages is striking. With iron tools the Dorians could work limestone blocks very finely and you'll see many examples of finely worked and intricately fitting stone blocks at Lato. The... More

After walking the Kritsa gorge (superb 2hr walk) we walked on to Lato not sure what to expect. Not at all developed in to a tourist spot (only 2 euro entry) rather you can walk all over the ruins and imagine what it was like (as there is little guidance provided). Walk round houses, cisterns, temple and theatre. Great views... More

It's so good to see a historical place that has not been over-restored. Oh, and amazing views of the valleys inland and of Agios Nikolaos at the coast.

We visited the Minoan settlement at Lato at lunchtime in July. The site and seting are fabulous and well worth the detour if you are passing. The site is well signed from Kritsa. There is good parking and toilets but no cafe faciities. Entry is jusr 2 euros. There is no guidebook available so read up before you go. The... More

This is a must while in Agios Nicolaos. This place is amazing!! You can experience the whole site by yourself.. Almost no boundaries ( just be respectful with the monument as you would in any other historical site ). For me this is much better than the palace of Knossos. The site have barely been restored, so will experience the... More

Truly fascinating and well worth the 2EUR entry fee. Walking through the ruins you can smell the wild herbs and see the wild olive trees swaying. Just imagine how they used to live.

High up on a mountain with spectacular views. Untouched ancient history. A steep climb up and down (with hindsight flip flops were not the best footwear choice?!?) but worth it. A real taste of the past.
