The Delphi Archeological Park sits on the side of the mountain. Nearby is the village of Arachova where there are restaurants, lodging, and more great views.

Delphi is built into the south western side of towering Mount Parnassus, which sadly has not been immune to bauxite scarring. Otherwise, Delphi has as heavenly a setting as the name suggests being built up the steep pristine slopes with views across gorges and a sea of rippling olive trees down to the Gulf of Corinth.
The ancient Greeks considered the centre of the world to be in Delphi; it was marked by a stone monument known as the omphalos (navel). It grew rich as it was venerated by most of the important ancient Greek city-states, who built various treasuries and monuments here.
The most renowned building is the temple Sanctuary of Apollo the site of the Oracle. The most familiar building, that features in all the pictures of Delphi (there isn’t so much of Apollo’s temple left) is the beautiful circular tholos from the temple of Athena, which is idyllically situated much lower down the slope.
We ascend Parnassus till we reach its two ski sections, Kellaria and Fterolakka, which together make up the largest ski centre in Greece. Ski House, Ski Café the shop facias proclaim. The villages are still very traditional with narrow streets and large squares full of men drinking their post church service and pre Sunday lunch aperitifs.

With the holy sanctuary at its foot it is a fabulous backdrop that soars nearly 2500 metres. Sacred for millennia to numerous Greek Gods it is steeped in mythology.
Apollo was one such Deity, and his Temple is central to the Oracle’s Prophecies.

You may be tempted to avoid the hike to the top - which is a hike. But if you are fit enough to make the climb, DON'T skip it! The stadium at the top is definitely worth it!

The open vistas provide a top-of-the-world feel to Delphi. The extensive ruins are spread over the slope of Mount Parnassus and dominate the region.

The only word that can describe the view from on top the mountain side is breathtaking. The climb was a pull for me but I stopped at every platform to catch my breath and made it to the top. There is a stadium at the top that was used before the Olympic games was founded in Olympia. You get a sense of the amount of people in ancient times that walked where I was walking. The climb to the top is very much worth the effort.

We travelled up Mount Parnasus to get to Delphi and visit the oracle site. The countryside scenery as you climb the mountain is very impressive.

As you drive to Delphi you can see this peak from every angle.
It sets the scene for the visit to the Oracle and you can understand how the Greeks thought this was the center of the World.

This is mountain that you'll see or drive close to when visiting the archeological site of Delphi. It's a nice peaceful area to explore, with great views if you have the time.

Hi, I read your review about Mont Parnassos where the ski center is just a small part of it and even though you wrote nice things you reviewd it with 3 instead of 5 stars! Why is that happened?

How easy is it to get to Mt Parnassus from the town of Delphi without driving? Are there any coaches or trains available?

We were driving rent a car.
However I saw various ads of coach companies with some windows of travel agents. Better to plan before hand.

Is it possible to peak mount parnassus in a day?

Yes it is, it depends on your starting point along the awful road which leads to the top (evitate the small tracks cutting the distances among the bends, you might meet vipers).

I was wondering whether Mount Parnassus would be visible from the Delphi ruins. Thanks.

Do you think it is possible to hike sections of the E4 near Aghoriani on Parnassos in late January-early February, or is there generally too much snow at that time of year?

Although snow is becoming more and more rare , its about 70% chance that you will find snow there at the end of january early February. I would advise to hike later in the year.

What is the remains of the Oracle like? Is the cleft in the ground etc still visible?
Subin Mohan
Dubai, United Arab Emirates144 contributions
It is really remains...What you can see is the foundation of the old temple, a few pillars, some stone blocks, the walkway to the temple, places where old treasuries and markets used to be and an amphitheater up the the hill. What is more important is to visit the museum where some of the important findings are kept.

Day trip to Delphi from Athens.... go via a tour operator or go solo?
Peter_Wello

Depends on your budget and preference. If your time is limited or you don't fancy negotiating the traffic in Athens, a tour is a convenient option. If you are happy to drive, hire cars can be collected downtown or at the airport. From the airport it is easy to access the freeway which takes you to Delphi. Metro from the city to airport is also convenient. When you get to Delphi both the museum and ruins are easy to navigate on your own (but parking is limited). Driving gives you the option to see other places. Arachovo is just before Delphi and worth a visit.
