The area
Neighbourhood: Monastiraki
Monastiraki is a souvenir-hunting enclave with a difference. Apart from the dramatic backdrop of the Acropolis, its network of alleys and pedestrianized streets surround the remains of both the Greek and Roman agoras, adding the quaint concept that this is where the ancients also came to shop. Named after the tiny monastery church at its center, Monastiraki Square is a lively spot by day or night, with street peddlers vying for your attention to sell you nuts and sweets. Down beside the metro station, the official Flea Market is an unbroken row of souvenir shops until you come to antique-oriented Platia Avissinias, while Pandrossou Street on the other side of the square offers more tourist shopping. The pedestrianized street beside the Greek Agora is lined with cafés offering fine views.

Ermou Street is a shopping hotspot rather than a sight-seeing destination. However it runs between the two largest and most popular squares in Athens - Syntagma Square and Monastiraki Square so there are lots of sight-seeing opportunities at either end.
At the Syntagma end, is the Greek Parliament with its unique and distinctive changing of the guard ceremony. At the other end is Monastiraki Square, the beautiful 11th century Kapnikarea Church, the Tzisdarakis Mosque and Hadrian’s Library.
Ermou Street itself is a pedestrian-only zone and is lined with clothes shops and boutiques. It’s dominated by big international chain-stores. There are familiar fashion brands like Massimo Dutti, Pull&Bear, Mango, Zara, and Marks & Spencer, make-up brands like Sephora and Mac and shoe stores like Foot Locker.
It’s a popular spot for street entertainers and there was a lively street band playing when we were there during the day.

Ermou is a crowded busy shopping street. The Church of Kapnikarea is a lovely Byzantine structure along the street that is worth a stop to view the interior of murals and icons.

We were lucky enough to have our hotel right off of Ermou St. We could just walk down and take advantage of all the shops, stores, cafes, and restaurants available. It's a really cool pedestrian street, which eventually allows cars further down, where you can spend a few hours strolling around.

Bustling at the Syntagma end with all kinds of shops and outlets, but as you get further away from this end the quality progressively drops off until it appears something more akin to a war zone than a European cultural hotspot.

This is busy shopping street with part of it (close to Syntagma Square) being pedestrian-only. It tends to be bustling and crowded most of the time.

One can't miss Ermou Street when in Athens, it runs through like a vein from Syntagma Square onwards. It is good orientation point to go to Plaka and Monastiriki Square, and most good hotels are nearby Ermou Street as well.
There are plenty of international retailers like H&M etc, a typical main shopping street, don't expect to see anything new or surprising. Lots of restaurants too, check out the side alleys.

large areas of the street are predestrianised which made walking through far more enjoyable. It is full of restaurants and shops and makes for an interesting shopping experience.

Ermou street is one of the longest and straightest streets in Athens. It is a direct connection between two of the main squares of Athens – Syntagma and Monastiriki squares. A large part of it is pedestrian only and it is the main upscale shopping street of Athens. It’s a must if you are in Athens for more than one day.
