About
The National Garden is a relaxing oasis located in the heart of Athens. This tranquil park is filled with beautiful trees, various plants, and shaded walkways. Here, you can have a picnic, explore the small zoo or botanical museum, and watch the animals as they play in the ponds. There is even a play area for children. The garden is also a popular shortcut from the Panathenaic Stadium to Syntagma Square and is included in many tours like the hop-on-hop-off bus, and bike tours. Visit in the morning or late afternoon for cooler temperatures. – Tripadvisor

    Pretty Gardens
    We walked through the gardens on the Athens Free Tour & it was very pretty. Heading to the Panathenaic Stadium the next day, we returned thinking we would just use it as a shaded cut through. However, we discovered there was more to it than just lots of cool greenery and some significant upgrading work going on. We chanced upon pretty seating areas, an amazing pond full of very happy terrapins (fascinating to watch!) and a small lake with ducks & geese. We spent a lovely hour just wandering out of the midday day sun.

    Nice park to relax
    After visiting the changing of the guard, we walked through this large garden with aviaries, turtle ponds, trees, pergolas, etc. A lot of renovation going on so we hit several dead ends. One WC in the park, hard to find.

    Beautiful Park
    Beautiful park, a peaceful place to walk away from the busier parts to the city. Extremely pleasant as a very green space where your surrounded by bird song. Plenty of well maintained paths & benches well shaded by trees. Some great statues / monuments as well as pools with fish / geese / turtles and a pen of goats! Worth a visit.

    Nice grounds to wander
    Very well located for Syntagma and the Parliament, there are plenty of spots for either sun-seeking or taking a few minutes in the shade. Some decent historical exhibits to have a look at and plenty of wildlife too - the central lake with the turtles in particular - although current agricultural work can make it pretty difficult to navigate. Easy to take as long as needed to fit your schedule.

    Old city park
    The entrance to this nice , oldfashioned city park is free. It is relaxing and lovely. Not particularly manicured but well kept. Great place for joggers. Certainly a family destination. A welcome respit destination.

    Lovely Athens Green Space
    My partner and I love wandering parks while on vacation, and the National Garden is a nice spot to take a walk. Be sure to find the turtle "parthenon". There's also a massive nest of green parrots in the park near the zoo and water fountain.

    Peaceful haven on a hot or busy day
    A treasure of a place especially in a hot day. Full of shade and greenery. Loads of places to sit, maybe picnic. Fantastic trees. Clearly very well cared for. Some fabulous quirky features like the Turtle Acropolis and wild goats in the tiny zoo. Check out the cafe where you sit under an arbour, especially their homemade ice cream. Only wish we'd been there earlier in the year when they served their olive oil ice cream.

    Large, Free Public Gardens in Centre of Athens
    For tourists, the National Garden can easily be combined with other sightseeing. We started at Hadrian’s Arch and the Temple of Olympian Zeus, then crossed the road to the Gardens and followed the meandering paths past Zappeion Hall. We finished at Syntagma Square and the Greek Parliament where we watched the Changing of the Guard ceremony. This was a very efficient itinerary plan which packed an awful lot into a very short time. There are lots of lovely marble statues and busts scattered throughout the garden and several ponds, fountains and water features. One of the prettiest parts of the garden centres around Zappeion Hall. When we were there in June, a long avenue of jacarandas was out in full purple bloom. It was just stunning. The Gardens were commissioned by Queen Amalia in 1838 as a Royal Garden. Over 500 species of plants were imported as well as animals including peacocks, ducks, and turtles. Many of the plants didn’t last long in the harsh Greek climate and were replaced with more suitable plantings. However there have always been large oaks, cypress trees and date palms in the garden since it was first created. Entry to the Gardens is free.

    Nice place to take a stroll
    Nice place to walk off a big dinner. Plenty of paths to walk down, and the grounds are nicely maintained. Connects to other major sites so it’s also a nice place to break up sightseeing during the day and tale a relaxing break.

    Beautiful walk and peaceful location
    I visited the National Garden Athens on December 5th while visiting Athens. I loved this location because it was a beautiful place to just walk around and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. There are tons of ponds, trees and statues to see. I would recommend as a great place to visit to get away from the city rush and take in a calm vibe.

Crazy hot, so a walk in this beautiful park, cooling under the trees, was a joy. We watched the changing of the guard at the tomb of the unknown warrior in the mid afternoon sun so this was a wonderfully welcome retreat before cocktails and dinner. Lovey, go and see.

If you want to escape the sun then head here for lots of shade!! Located next to the Parliament Building. It was nice to wander down the shady paths. Plenty of benches to sit & rest.

This was a disappointment. There wasn’t beautiful lush gardens with flowers of many types and colours as we had expected. The one bright thing were the green parrots all around the grounds.

Absolutely vast central city park. My wife and I visited as part of the Piraeus and Athens Hop On Hop Off service from the cruise terminal and really enjoyed the opportunity to experience the park.

If you are heading this way through the city then I’d say it’s worth a walk through- it’s not so much a ‘national garden’ as a park. Few plants and plenty of seating. Worth seeking out the hall as the architecture is stunning.

PROS
* Pastoral area between the Hellenic Parliament and the President's Mansion
* Relaxing, pleasant and quiet
* A pond with ducks, some statues and other stuff

CONS
* Small and plain
* Not very lush green

"I VISITED THIS PLACE"...
... after seeing the Changing of the guard ceremony in front of the Hellenic Parliament, when we were on our way to see the Presidential Mansion. We did see ducks and children and a balloon seller at the pond, and I posted here "helpful" 👍 attached photographs 📷.

The park is not large and seemed rather unremarkable to me.

WAS IT WORTH THE COST?
It is free

WOULD "I VISIT THIS PLACE" AGAIN?
No

ADVICE
I see no tourist value/need in coming specifically to see this place

This is a big green space in the absolute center of town. Much loved and used by lots of people, but it does not feel crowded because it is so large. The landscaping is varied and you can find some shade. Good for relaxing after a tour of the city.

We had a nice walk through the park as we went across to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The park has a good variety of plants and flowers and there are some animals inside like goats, ducks and geese. We thought it was cool how there were some ruins hanging out and plenty of shade.

The park has free bathrooms inside the parks which was nice for relief as the ones outside the park were closed when we visited. There weren't many vendors open in the area but there are lots of restaurants and convenience stores near the park.

The closest metro is Syntagma at the northwest corner. Plan to spend an hour here if you like checking out parks.
