Address
Neighbourhood: Syntagma
Perhaps the best place to get your bearings is Syntagma Square, crowned by the imposing Parliament building on its upper side and surrounded by other large structures, such as the exclusive Hotel Grande Bretagne. The grand avenues that lead towards Omonia are also full of massive Neoclassical edifices like the Numismatic Museum and those around smaller Platia Kolokotroni. Here you will find lots of travel agents, bookshops and fashion shops, especially on Ermou Street. Just south of Syntagma Square, you can take a breather in the lush National Gardens, which extend into the grounds of the Zappeio palace and beyond to the ancient Temple of Olympian Zeus.
How to get there

    Beating heart of Athens
The heart of modern Athens sits in front of the parliament building. It is a centre of transport and has a number of lovely fountains. There are entertainers looking for your patronage. Nice place surrounded by lovely buildings.

Nice to pass through but can be sketchy at night
Found this area to be a nice place to stroll, however, there were a lot of characters a few of which tried to follow us for a little bit that was a little longer than it should have lasted. That said, it is a nice place to stop for a photo op, and maybe a coffee. Passing through at night seems to be even sketchier. So take heed and watch your valuables.

    Huge Plaza in the Center
This huge plaza is definitely the center of town with the palace and the fountains. Also some very grand hotels around it. We passed through it many times but were not dazzled. The major Metro change point is below. Always a lot of people around, often seeking some shade in the bright sun.

Syntagma Square is within walking distance of most major sights.
Most tourists will find themselves here at one point or another.
The Greek Parliament, the famous Changing of the Guards ceremony, and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier are directly across the road.
It’s also a public transport hub. The central metro station is located here and its a drop-off/pick-up point for the airport buses.
There are no real standout sights in the square itself but it’s busy and bustling and is the centre of Athens.
Its main feature is a central fountain with shooting water jets. As far as fountains go, it’s nothing special and the jets were always switched off when we were there.
There is another smaller and less showy fountain, the Cascade Fountain, tucked discreetly along the northern wall of the square. Water flows down a series of stepped tiers. This is a small but peaceful, green section of the square, with established, shady trees, flower beds and park benches.
A nice little bronze statue of a young runner is hidden in this corner of the square also. It is one of several statues donated by Lord Bute in 1884. I only saw this one - somehow I missed the others.
A lot of history is attached to this square. Demonstrations, social upheaval, political rallies and protests have centred on and around it since its creation in the 1830s, although there’s not much historical evidence of it today.
From Syntagma Square, we walked down Ermou Street, the main shopping area in Athens, which links the square with Monastiraki Square. It’s an easy and nice walk between the two squares.

Nothing really impressive in the square. It's where most people get to and from the airport. Shops on two sides, hotel on the third.

Busy public square, also transport hub and most people's first stop from airport as bus stop is here.

Also, lots of other things to do and see, statues, water fountains to name a few. Is constantly busy so you always get to enjoy it with a few hundred people.

Just of the Plateia Syntagmatos is tomb of the unknown soldier that should be on your list of things to see.

My wife and I arrived in Syntagma Square from the airport. This the bustling center of Athens. In front of the Plateia Syntagmatos is the tomb of the unknown soldier where they have the changing of the guard on the hour, which is an impressive attraction.

No people and no water in the fountain, but calm and some city silence. The best time to stroll around Syntagma Square, in August, is at 1 a.m.

A great place to relax, get away from the crowded streets, and people watch. The square is well maintained, clean, and nicely treed. Much history is attached to this square, including changes brought about because of political and other demonstrations and rallies held here.

Impressive yellow looking building overlooking the main city centre square. Well preserved and a more modern but still historic view of Athens
