Large square that we walked through most days as it was a great access for transport for us. Busy. Omonia metro station and various bus stops on the square. There is a Hondas centre and quite a few kiosk stands, snack bars, bakery and shops around the square. We would often grab a cold or hot drink or a bite... More

There is quite a feeling of uneasiness surrounding Omonia square. We walked through twice, once in the evening which did have a hostile feeling in the air. There is not much to see. A metro station and a number of shops will greet you, you will not leave with forever lasting memories.

There is nothing special with this square. There is a metro station. There is nothing significant on that square.

It is definitely a city centre but not much to see. You don't miss alot if you don't visit this square

A few pickpocets tried to rob me in that area in one of the streets, one asked a question while the other one opened a chain of my bag, so be careful there and don't put valuable things in outside pockets.

We would come to this square every day, to eat at the nice cafe or the gyro stand. There was a fabulous pastry shop there too. The metro stop was convenient when we wanted to go to other parts of the city. But on our last full day, as I was getting off the metro and crossing the street, someone... More

Compared to the... official heart of Athens, Syntagma Square, Omonia Square, just about 10 minutes walk away, may almost seem like a - wallflower. But it's the place which maybe still belongs most of all to the Athenians themselves; it's featured in many Greek movies, and it's always had a special flair. And visitors who understand the Greek mentality and... More

A great pastry shop Benthes, and a great little cafe with good food and great service. Easy to eat for the vegetarians in our group.

Omonia square is a busy thoroughfare in Athens. You have to hold your breath at times to cross the road, because of the huge amount of traffic. However, it is lively and has many shops. Sit back and watch the world go by.....it will at a fast pace.

Staying in Omonia

Neighbourhood Profile
Omonia
Omonia Square is as plain in appearance as Syntagma is grand. Surrounded largely by functional blocks from the 1950s and 60s and no longer boasting its underground stalls, the square is now mostly frequented by immigrants and bargain shoppers. The most rewarding area to explore is to the south. Set off down Athinas Street, with the Acropolis gradually coming into focus in the distance, and you will get a sense of old commercial Athens, especially at the picturesque meat, fish and vegetable markets some way beyond the City Hall. The blocks to the west of Athinas are home to many Chinese and South Asian traders, adding a multicultural atmosphere to what was until the late 1990s a very homogenous society.
