The lively Athens! Not only tourists come here, also local people. We liked the square and the graffiti all around. It´s less polished than Plaka, but exactly this give this neighbourhood it´s own charm.

This is a good neighborhood for those who like to explore outside the typical tourist areas. There are no big visitor sites here, just a pleasant neighborhood where people live their lives. You can walk here from the Plaka, so it is central. Lots of good restaurants and cafes. A taste of real life.

If, like us, you are keen to explore beyond the main tourist sights, then Psirri is an interesting area. It’s a less-developed side of Athens, with a more grit than glamour feel about it.
We started at Monastiraki Square, near the A for Athens Hotel, and headed up Agios Theklas Street, winding our way through the area to 'Spice Street’ (Evripidou St) and ending up at Central Market.
On ‘Spice Street’ we were intrigued by a small herb and spice shop, Elixir. With its various dried herbal mixtures and concoctions, it would not have looked out of place in Harry Potter’s Diagon Alley. We bought some lovely hand-made soaps here.
I’d recommend a short detour via the fantastical Little Kook cafe with its incredible Disneyland-like decorations. If ever there was a place created for photo opportunities, this is it. Kids will love it.
Iroon Square was another good stopping point. We watched bougatsa dough being stretched and pulled the traditional way at Bougatsadiko Thessaloniki. It’s like a free open-kitchen show. Of course we bought some bougatsa and spanakopita which we ate on the spot.
Along the way, we saw lots of graffiti and colourful street art. Two of the best were Colourful Warrior, a large-scale mural above the Monastiraki Station entrance and Alexandros Vasmoulakis’ mural that looks down over Iroon Square.
If you only have a day or two in Athens, you’ll be too busy seeing the main tourist sights but if you have any extra time, this is an excellent way to see another side of Athens.
NOTE: ‘Psirri’ appears in guidebooks and maps with various spellings including Psyri, Psiri & Psyrri.

Cool and hip area of Athens with many cafes, restaurants and bars. Streets are not overly crowded and it is easy to walk around with limited car and motorcycle traffic.

We took a lovely self-guided (free) Rick Steves walking tour of Psiri. We enjoyed seeing the wall art and local eating establishments, and learning about the interesting history of the neighborhood.

Had a fab long weekend here in the Philia Boutique Hotel and could not fault the experience. Only a short 10 min walk to the acropolis and many restaurants/ bars on our doorstep. A lovely authentic Greek experience in safe area. 10 put of 10...

Take the time to walk the historic downtown neighborhoods.
Enjoy the cafes.
Go to a rooftop at dusk.
Follow the alleys.
And if you must - shop.

Unimpressed, gritty, nothing for us. Walked through to central market. Would have avoided. Some reviewers talked about the nightlife. We are not into that, so cannot comment.
