An important burial site since the 12th BCE it’s a fascinating place to visit.
A very good Museum displays many of the original artefacts excavated down the decades. A fabulous potent bull from the Grave Enclosure of Dionysios of Kollytos is wonderful, as is a radiant Sphinx.
A highlight is the Street of Tombs where many prestigious monuments were placed to honour the great departed.
Evocative are remains of sanctuaries and Sacred Gates, including the Dipylon which was the busiest in antiquity and it marked the arrival point of the road from the sacred site of Eleusis.

This was the best of the ground level sites so if you choose one then this one is top. There’s information around the site and the small museum has interesting artefacts.
Enjoyed spotting all the tortoise around as well.

If you are visiting Athens with the combo ticket. Spot #6 features Keramikos. There is also a small museum inside, toilets and a vending machine for cold drinks.

This is included in the Ministry of Culture 5-site ticket. If you really like ancient piles of rocks, then go. It takes longer to walk around than the other 2 short visits (Roman Agora and Hadrian's Library). The museum is small but packed full of stuff. So, that makes it worth it. If anyone spends an hour here, I would be surprised. I powered through.

I took a lot away from this experience, in particular some really interesting information about the role of the steles (headstones) in ancient Greek life and culture. The site itself is fairly large and includes plenty trees for some shade from the sun. If nothing else it’s a lovely place to spend an hour or so walking amongst the ruins, wildflowers and fauna. Watch out for the tortoises, we came across two!
This archaeological site is further out than the other big ones, but is within a comfortable walking distance for anyone who is fit and healthy. I think the sight seeing buses also go there.

Included on the Athens tourist ticket, so I scheduled a stop. I'm sure the exhibits are of interest to some but such a vast site without direction is difficult to follow for a layperson and it's a fair trek away from the centre. Probably worth a visit if you've time to spare but not a must do.

Very nice archeological site within Athens.
We visited this archeological site as part of our pass for « Acropolis & 6 sites combo ».
We bought our tickets via GetYourGuide and there was an audio guide provided for this site.
This allowed us to navigate this site as well as the museum.
If you don’t have an audio guide or a guide in person, I guess that the site, beside the museum, will be done faster, by reading the approximately 10 panels available there (around 30 to 45 minutes). Next to the site, there is the museum that is quite nice and can be done in 20 to 30 minutes.

I would say that within the « Acropolis & 6 sites combo » do (in order of priority)
1) Acropolis (3 hours and go there at 8 AM or late) and if you have time, go the Acropolis Museum next to it (not included in that pass)
2) Ancient Agora (2 hours 45)
3) Kerameikos (2 hours) (You will enjoy way more with an audio guide, if you don’t have one, or are short on time, there is a small museum that is quite nice and take 20 to 30 minutes)
Note that this is advice as a cemetery, but the ruins of the cemetery are only 25% to 30% of the site
4 & 5) Roman Agora (mainly « Tower of the Winds) (25 minutes) or Aristotle's School (25 minutes)
5) Temple of Zeus (if you have the audio guide from Clio Tour) (40 minutes)
7) Hadrian’s Labrary (20 minutes)

Be careful, the opening hours desplayed online are not correct. Before going we checked on the website, which stated that in winter, all attractions are open until 17:00. Turns out that they do not care and everything was closed by 15:00. We arrived shortly before 15:00 and were very disappointed.

After perhaps a dozen trips to Athens, we realised there was quite a large area of the ancient city we hadn't seen. A short walk from Monastirakis station, Keramikos covers an extensive area within and outside the old city wall on the road to Pireus. As its name suggests, it was the area where the potters lived, and outside the walls it was a cemetery with many fine funerary objects. Sign boards explain what you're looking at -- always helpful! An excellent museum of the site houses the original funerary monuments while copies are in place outside, as well as other objects found on the site. The sight of a couple of tortoises ambling along among the old stones made my day!

The museum has many artifacts discovered at the site. The archeological site is easy to walk. Worth a visit to learn how the Greeks buried their ancestors.
