About
Onion Athens is a place, where learning to cook traditional Greek recipes is approached differently – where the focus is on learning by doing, using what you have, what’s in the season – and most importantly by following true, traditional recipes the exact way we were taught by our greek mothers and grandmothers. We offer a truly hands-on cooking experience combined with a fun dinner party environment. Just like getting an invitation from a local Greek friend! At Onion Athens you learn the art of cooking greek meals, from the very first cut to the very last taste. Let's cook!

This is the second time our family has done a cooking class in a new city. (The previous one in Rome). While it's a bit on the expensive side, it's a great activity for families, especially teens, to get everyone engaged and fed for an evening. My kids love to cook so they really wanted to take the lead. If you already know how to cook, you may still pick up a few tips here and there, but still fun to get idea of the history of the food and the local flair. After prepping the food, we sat down to eat with our classmates. The ladies who ran the class were delightful and instructional without being overbearing. My only suggestion would be to have a bit more surface space so more people could work at one time. Our class was full so we had to switch off at times, which was fine. But maybe just an extra table so more work could be done would be nice. We didn't actually get to assemble the moussaka, which my kids said they wished they could have done. The location is great and the venue feels like you're cooking in someone's house. Overall, we had a great time, and I would totally recommend this for other families in Athens looking for something different.

Despite visiting Athens many times, and going through the neighborhood many times, I somehow never made it inside the Central Market! This was a nice opportunity to have a relaxed walk through the market, see some of the side streets, and then cook. I am already familiar with cooking basics and Greek food, so this was just a way to enjoy a day to meet new people and eat good food. Perfect amount of time--you could spend more time in the market and area around it but then the tour would be a long day. If you are looking for a very technical expert-level course you might not enjoy it. If you are new to Athens do this tour early in your stay so you can get ideas for places to eat :) Definitely recommend!

Really fantastic experience and best activity I did in Athens

Three lovely local and enthusiastic ladies welcome you into their kitchen and great hosts very relaxed beautiful .

We enjoyed the slow pace of making our Greek lunch with nice wine and drinks .

It’s a great way to learn more about the city and most of all the welcoming , charming and great hospitality of our Athenian hosts

We went at lunch time and timing was just right

They also offer wine pairings and I will return to do that next time I visit Athens

Just brilliant and made my holiday feel really special and memorable

A really great day of cooking tradition Greek food. Melpo was fantastic sharing her knowledge and cooking tips. Everything was not only delicious but easy to cook. We’ll be trying the recipes at home for sure.

Our time with Maria was awesome. We were expecting an old Greek grandma to be our hostess (which would have been great) but to our surprise we got a young, hip, energetic and personable Maria who took us on a market tour (really fun!) and then back to cook. My 22 year old daughter really enjoyed herself. I learned some new tips! We ate delicious food. So glad we did this!

What a wonderful experience. I would highly recommend this for anyone wanting to experience what it would be like in an Greek home for a Sunday lunch. Christina was very knowledgeable of food and general Greek culture. The market walk was a great experience, followed by a great class with recipes which are easily replicated back home.

My husband and I participated in the Athens Shopping Walk and Cooking Class and had a great time. We love cooking and we loved visiting the outdoor market, meat and fish markets. Fascinating!

Then the beautiful kitchen with Christina & Maria was so much fun. We learned about Greek Customs and persona stories about life in Greece. Good instruction and delicious food. The space is beautiful and participation was really fun and delicious! A highlight of our vacation.

Four of us signed up for the Onion class in March. The place is well laid out and equipped. The instructors were very pleasant and helpful and the food we made ( moussaka, Greek Salad, and fried cheese pies)was tasty. Overall it was a lovely cultural snapshot and was enjoyed by all of us. But...

I’ve done a number of classes like this at a handful of locations. The only really new thing I took away from this class was that philo can be a thicker pastry than the philo dough that I buy at the store. A good variation of an olive oil pastry. The Onion doesn’t measure up to those previous experiences.

The market trip was good. My only gripe here was that we could have spent more time at it. Our source at the meat market was near the door but beyond was a wonderland of meats etc. that we never explored. (How do you cook a sheep’s head? And where would I even find one in this part of Connecticut where even tripe is hard to come by?)

Some of the warnings that were made prior to our arriving at the market might point at what I saw as the issue. The program is basically toned down so that those of us who live in the supermarket world of packaged meats etc. won’t be shocked.

My bottom line. A fun morning but you’re another going to pushing any cultural limits.

Thank you very much for your review and feedback! We will take into consideration all of your comments, as we always want to improve and provide the very best of our services. When it comes to our classes, let me clarify a few points though : The Onion Athens cooking class is definitely not a technical cooking course, not led by a professional chef. It is more of a local experience. The concept is that you get to experience first hand the process of shopping, cooking and eating a Greek traditional meal with a local Athenian friend. The recipes are popular and traditional ones, the way we learned and cooked them with our mothers and grandmothers. If you are an experienced cook, you might not learn many technical, new things, but you definitely get to cook and eat a delicious 4-course meal with all the tips that you need. The market visit is designed to last about 45 minutes to an hour long, since we buy most of our ingredients fresh from there. It would have been impossible for us to stay longer to each point and talk more on recipes or ways to cook different types of ingredients that we come across, but we are definitely always open to questions. Once again thank you very much for your review and your comments!

We are regular travellers around Europe and Athens is one of our favourite cities. Food, cooking & eating out are a big part of our holidays as are visits to local markets combined with discovering local cuisine so we decided to book on the Onion cooking class and tour with our 4 year old son. Mariefi is a great host and we had such a great time visiting the local markets and shops, discovering places we would never have found on our own. The location of Onion is fantastic and the setting of a contemporary open plan apartment space worked perfectly to create a wonderful lunch with the ingredients that we bought; it was so relaxing. We all had such a great time and I would definitely recommend the Onion experience if you enjoy local food, markets and cuisine!
