Aptly monumental to honour revered hero

It’s a splendid monument, dynamic in its striking force, to memorialise a revered Greek hero.

Unveiled in the early 1900s, it was created by the artist Lazaros Sochos.

Kolokotronis, a General and premier leader of the War of Independence, had his most famous victory against the Ottomans at the 1822 Battle of Dervenakia.

In full military attire, he is portrayed as turning his helmeted head towards the Old Parliament and purposely pointing forwards.

Greek Hero!

Theodoros Kolokotronis (3 April 1770 – 16 February 1843) was a Greek general and the pre-eminent leader of the Greek War of Independence (1821–1829) against the Ottoman Empire. Kolokotronis's greatest success was the defeat of the Ottoman army under Mahmud Dramali Pasha at the Battle of Dervenakia in 1822. In 1825, he was appointed commander-in-chief of the Greek forces in Peloponnese. Today, Kolokotronis ranks among the most prominent figures in Greece's War of Independence.

Greek War Hero

This is a nice statue on Kolokotroni Street in Athens. I believe the statue is of a general from the 1800's Greek War of Independence. It is framed nicely by the attractive Old Parliament building behind.

Greek Hero

We passed by the Old Parliament Building and sitting proudly on his Horse waiting to go into battle was Theodora’s Kolokotronis. This Gent by all accounts was a Greek War Hero and the sculpture of him and his horse stands proudly on a Plinth for all to see in this busy busy cosmopolitan City.

Big Statue on the Avenue

This is a massive statue that we saw from the cab as we drove by. It definitely caught my eye. I do not recommend that you go out of your way to see it.

Honoring Greek War Hero

Theodoros Kolokotronis was a Greek general and the pre-eminent leader of the Greek War of Independence (1821–1829) against the Ottoman Empire. Kolokotronis's greatest success was the defeat of the Ottoman army under Mahmud Dramali Pasha at the Battle of Dervenakia in 1822. The problem is there is no explanation of who this gent in the statue actually is. Located next to the National Historical Museum in a square with trees for shade.

One of the Greatest Greek!

One of the greatest Greeek men.This 'huge' man helped like no other the revolution of Greek againts Turkish but finally the Greek-as usual- after war prisoned him and convicted to death...The old man of moria (as is the other name of Kolokotroni) show with his hand the side that enemies come.
