A rebuilt theatre after a fire destroyed its original design in early 1900. Now with modern fire resistant material it captures French beaux-arts and Italian classic styles. Porto elite, associations, and general public initiated its restructuring to carry forward their intelligence to enrich the city. A history of opera, cinema, theaterical and musical arts draws large crowds to this Batalha Square. I was allowed a sneak peak at the coming exhibit. Prepare yourself for 10 acts of 100 years of history at a location once a place for royal audiences.

This is a truly beautiful theater building. The outside is astounding and monumental and set in an open square with some cafes nearby. The lobby is also pretty. I did not attend a performance but did go in to view the lovely marble lobby.

One of historical building in the city center of Porto to visit. The building will attract your attention when you are in Batalha. I never visit inside, just pass by the building.
In the morning and afternoon, you can see many doves here.
Cons:
1. Some homeless people sleep outside the building which makes it look less beautiful. I hope the local government can find better solution for this case.
2. The poo of doves are nearby the building.

We walked into the building just to see the foyer and spoke to the young lady behind the reception desk. We decided to take the 1 hour guided tour (€3 with Porto card). It was excellent (although she stated up front it would be in Portuguese, she provided audio devices which gave us the information in English and went out of her way at each stage to ask if we had questions and to provide information in English). Overall we were very impressed with the theatre, not least because of the friendliness and professionalism of the tour guide.

There has been a Theatre on this site since the 17th Century, with the Current building dating from 1906, it a great looking building, you can take guided tours, but my itinerary didn't permit the time, but it was certainty worth a Photo-stop.

A really good value tour which walks you through the public and private areas of this elegant theatre.
The building was not only built to present theatrical productions but, in its hay day, as a place to be seen. There are seeping, plush carpeted, stairways leading to balconies overlooking grand and ornate rooms. As you take the stairs higher up the building, to the seating reserved for the less affluent patrons, the stairs become narrower, the carpet disappears and the experience is altogether lass lavish. Interesting to experience the architectural social demarcation.
Going to the top of the building and walking through the fly tower, with its dizzying views down onto the stage, is fascinating. The auditorium is stunning with its gold sculptural decorations and restored ceiling painting.
The theatre had a chequered history falling into disrepair, becoming a cinema and being renovated. The tour takes you through some of this history as you walk through the building. Text and audio is available in several languages.
The tour lasts 50 mins and costs €5.

We did an escorted tour of the theatre. There was just the two of us. The guide spoke perfect English and took us everywhere: the stage , costume area , props and up above the stage. A wonderful tour well worth it.

Theatro Nacional Sao Joao is a nicely built structure located on Batalha Square. It was closed during our time of visit in the morning by early June.

Teatro Nacional Sao Joao is an ancient building in Batalha Square. Due to time constraint, we have not paid visit to the internal part of the theatre. It is worthwhile to tour around the area while visiting Porto.
