This is another beautiful example of the Portuguese use of decorative tiles and here you have a very large area of it. After admiring it, take a peak inside at the extravagant interior, as usual in most of the churches, which must be appreciated for the craftsmanship. Well worth a quick stop if in the area.

The tiles on the outside of the Carmo are excellent, although it is hard to get a good picture because of the street clutter. The interior of the church is quite impressive with the use of blue in many of the naves.

There's a theme going through many of the outstanding buildings in Porto - the Blue and White tiled exteriors - and this Church is no exception. You can't tire of marvelling at the beauty of the expansive, exterior tiled walls of this Church and you can even forgive the uglier, brash religious art crammed within.

The inside of the church is definitely a work of art. However, the huge blue & white tile wall on the outside is the real masterpiece. Worth checking it out.

Beautiful, gorgeous religious art. The ceilings, the altar, the images of the Saints, the columns supporting the side altars covered by gold, a church not to miss a visit to, even though you are not religious.

There are 2 churches next to and I think the Carmo is nicer from outside, and the other from inside (its Igreja da Carmelitas). Carmo is famouse for it's azulejos (blue ceramic wall tiles) and are really beautiful. But inside it's too colorfull for my taste. The next by church is Carmelitas and it's full of gold, but really nice.... More

We stopped into this church for a quick visit and we were definitely not disappointed. Like most churched in Porto, it was so beautifully decorated inside and out. Must see!

Like so many Portuguese churches this one is large and just a bit shabby, though the outside however does have a splendid tile façade on one side and the inside is very glitzy with gilt altar and gilt decoration everywhere...all a bit over the top if you ask me and for the catholic church hardly surprising...after all you have to spend... We did not go into this church we just viewed from the outside as the children where "churched out". We took tram number 18 from the riverfront and glad we stopped for a look.

Wondeful piece of religious architecture, together with its neighbour, the carmelites. If possible, try to go to a religious service. Traditional portuguese mass. Not to miss
