This unique sanctuary is distinguished by its location, amazing stairs and details of the front facade. For me, the interior of the church was less interesting than what can be seen from the outside. Of course, the richly carved altar is a real work of art, but the church interior disappointed me a bit. The current church was built in the 18th century. There are almost 700 steps leading to it from the city side. These baroque stairs are an original attraction in themselves. Standing facing the church, we see two richly decorated church towers, but above all, Rococo decorations of the doors and windows. It is a real masterpiece. You can climb the towers and it is worth climbing [for an additional fee] because the panorama of the area from above is worth it. The church is located on a hill and surrounded by a well-kept park. All the details here are refined and admirable. It is not only a sanctuary but simply a beautiful place.

I went up to the sanctuary via the monumental staircase that starts in the center of Lamego. It's worth it, along the way up, to admire the magnificent tile panels and some sculptures. The surrounding gardens are well preserved and it is worth strolling through them, enjoying the smell of vegetation, taking a deep breath and listening to the sound of the water. The Baroque-style church is magnificent and deserves a visit, including a visit to the sacristy.

You need cash €2.50 per adult to go to the tower, the church is free! You get the tickets behind the sanctuary at the store. Check photos for website and times it is open. They have restrooms by the store too. There is a cafe in the middle of the stairs to the left (with toilets) on the way up and another one at the top by the store. I always offer at least €5 on every free church and suggest you give what you can so that they can stay free and not charge €10 or more like some churches around the world. It is just so lovely. They asked no photos, but I saw it on the way out 😬.

Serious safety incident

11 am on a Saturday in broad daylight.
random dude walks up to me,
asks for time,
grabs my ass,
runs a few feet away after I punch him
and exposes himself.
I’m writing this here because he’s obviously a local
and this can’t be a one time occurrence.
hopefully someone catches the guy

An amazing religious site on one of the traditional ways to Santiago da Compostela. About 650 steps climb from the central town plaza to the 18th century church. Lots of shrines and statuary to look at on the way up, and amazing hand-painted scenes on massive tiled murals. Spectacular views.

An amazing building feat.
We started at the top and enjoyed the views as we slowly walked down into the centre of town.
Really worthwhile.
For those who do not wish to walk up you can take a taxi up which costs 5€ or less and they do take small dogs too.

I set out to get up early and climb the stairs to the shrine. It can take about 10 minutes to upload at a good pace and also taking pictures. Sunrise from the sanctuary or stairs is more or less fine, but I think it is better as they give the first rays of light on the stairs and without anyone.

It is all about the journey! From town, there are over 600 stairs with 9 flat landing areas replete with beautiful landscaping, tiles, statues and a fountain, and elegant railings. The view from the town square of stairs ascending to the church forms a dream scape. As you climb, the wonders unfold. Are last you achieve the white and carved facade of the church and you feel a transcendence from the ordinary. You must walk the stairs!

We stopped at the sanctuary on our way to the Douro valley. If you are in the area this is a must stop visit.
Located on top of a hill with almost 700 steps to the bottom (you can drive up to the top like we did) with beautiful tile displays all the way down.
Surrounded by trees and beautiful views of the valley and mountains.

This is the must do in Lamego which is otherwise relatively unimpressive. This sanctuary on top of the hill is accessible by taxi and the internal decoration is wellworth seeing The way down is by 686 undemanding steps flanked for a good deal of the way by statues or again a taxi. The view from the terrace is a good photo opportunity.

Bom dia!

Written 10 May 2017
Siccome il paese è estremamente piccolo posso dire che in buona sostanza inizia dal centro del paese. Vicino all'inizio della scalinata c'è un enorme parcheggio in cui lasciare la macchina quindi molto comodo.

Does anyone know the opening and closing hours for this cathedral?
Written 19 March 2017
I do not know. When I went to there, I could not to get in because there was a service, not let other people in. Therefore, you also need to find out the hours of service if you would like to make sure that you can get to inside.

We were recently at this small shrine in Lamego, Portugal. We started at the top and our guide pointed out a tree which was fenced in at the top. The tree had a thick trunk. I am doing a scrapbook on the trip and would like to know what the story behind this unusual looking tree is (our guide told us, but I forgot). Can you help?
