Wear your trainers: it’s a long climb!
An amazing religious site on one of the traditional ways to Santiago da Compostela. About 650 steps climb from the central town plaza to the 18th century church. Lots of shrines and statuary to look at on the way up, and amazing hand-painted scenes on massive tiled murals. Spectacular views.

Worth all the stairs to visit
A festival for Our Lady of Healing/Cures was occurring when we were there, so parking was difficult and many roads closed. After finding a spot we walked the 600 steps to the top and visited the small church. It didn’t take long to see, then we walked down the 600 steps. It was worth the effort.

A must see, walk up the steps, walk through by the forest or take a taxi, but go!
You need cash €2.50 per adult to go to the tower, the church is free! You get the tickets behind the sanctuary at the store. Check photos for website and times it is open. They have restrooms by the store too. There is a cafe in the middle of the stairs to the left (with toilets) on the way up and another one at the top by the store. I always offer at least €5 on every free church and suggest you give what you can so that they can stay free and not charge €10 or more like some churches around the world. It is just so lovely. They asked no photos, but I saw it on the way out 😬.

An amazing building feat. We started at the top and enjoyed the views as we slowly walked down into the centre of town. Really worthwhile. For those who do not wish to walk up you can take a taxi up which costs 5€ or less and they do take small dogs too.

We parked our car at the church on the top and walked down to the town and than the way back up. The church is not that beautiful but the camino is a great thing to do!

Having seen photos of this famous church and the incredible staircase leading up to it we decided to pop into Lamego en-route from Pinhao to Amarante.

From the attractive plaza below you get a fabulous view of this grand church, high on a hill, that is reached by a fantastic, multi-level staircase with beautiful stonework and tiled art pieces at every level. You can actually drive up to the church but why on earth would anyone do that when you can ascend this incredible stairway?

I suppose the small matter of 686 steps might put some people off, but as a couple of relatively fit pensioners we managed the climb easily enough - and you can always stop for a rest as many times as you like on the way up.

The church itself was very nice, albeit slightly smaller than I would have imagined, but the staircase is really what we came to see.

Visiting this church and santuary was very interesting. According to our guide, people have been known to climb up the stairs on their knees to demonstrate their belief that the Virgin would grant them children. We didn't see anyone do this, but I can imagine that desperate people might do this as an act of faith. It is a beautiful church inside and out. We didn't spend much time in the gardens outside, but they looked lovely.

The santuario’s bottom level is down at the town and there is a fantastic view of the whole from the site of the cathedral for those who do not want to climb the 600 steps there is a bit of a scary drive all the way up and it is worth to go up visiting the little baroque church on top and have a look down on the city

It is all about the journey! From town, there are over 600 stairs with 9 flat landing areas replete with beautiful landscaping, tiles, statues and a fountain, and elegant railings. The view from the town square of stairs ascending to the church forms a dream scape. As you climb, the wonders unfold. Are last you achieve the white and carved facade of the church and you feel a transcendence from the ordinary. You must walk the stairs!
