I'm one of those people fascinated by castles and palaces and I think this is a great piece of history. It is located in the park near the historical center of the town, nearby there is a Palace of the dukes of Bragança and a chapel where Afonso Henriques was baptized (at least, that's what the signs say). I think this is a sight you can't miss in Portugal's birth place, you don't have to enter to admire it (the entrance is paid and it's in some works, or at least it was when I visited), but you do have to visit. Also, right behind the castle there is a free parking space.

This place is well worth visiting. The views are great! The cable car was fun! It’s great to visit the original capital of Portugal and understand the history of this beautiful country!

We had heard about this place and hopped on a train from Porto to visit. The whole little town was just magical! The castle is undergoing renovations but was still worth the visit.

We went on a Tuesday and there seemed to be ample parking all around. We managed to get a spot right in front of it, so after touring the castle we walked the historic center and had lunch. The castle is very nice. Worth visiting.

A nightmare trying to find the carpark for the castle, although it's just behind the Palace of the Dukes of Bragança. You can walk to it from the palace. The signs around the area are very misleading, we must have done 6 laps before we worked it out. Then went in to find works going on and nothing open. Access is very rough for people with mobility issues. Waste of time. But a nice lady in the carpark directed us to a restaurant for a standard Portuguese prato do dia. Nice enough.

This is a nice stop if you do a combo day at Braga then Guimaraes. The old keep style castle only takes a few minutes to walk around but worth the photo opportunities. Decent amount of parking nearby. Then do take the time to visit the newer castle a short walk down the hill.

With its traditional, formidable design, there is enough of this wonderful structure remaining to make it the sort of archetypical castle from history books. It originally dates back to the 10th century but, as with most ancient buildings, had significant modifications and addition made over the following centuries.

Understandably, it is now a designated National Monument due to its important role in Portugal’s path to independence.

Sadly this is just a shell of the castle, you no longer are able to walk the walls. Which makes the castle very much a 10 mins visit. At lease it is free.

The castle is very good, you can walkaround the top of the walls. There is a main tower in the middle that you can go in, but after climbing up a lot of stairs you just come to a dead end room and not out at the very top. You get a good view of the Ducal Palace from the castle.
There is not that much to see as most of it is just empty courtyard and walls, and there is not that much information about its history. You have to get a ticket from the nearby Ducal Palace which is really annoying if you just want to go to the castle only. There is someone at the castle in a ticket window checking tickets, so I've no idea why they don't just let you buy tickets from there.

The castle was very good you pay 2 euro on their online app for admission you get to go all around the inside if the castle and the walls. There is a video at the very top telling you all about the history of the castle and king Alfonso.

Guimares is a beautiful amazing town one of my favourites going out in evening for dinner n drinks is a delight ♥️ excellent value for money.
