About
At Alberto Sampaio Museum everything combines to leave the visitor wanting to return here. We get thrilled without knowing why. What is certain is that visitors feel serenity and left enchanted by the beauty of the set. This is the only national museum that opens its doors during the night, in the months of July and August. Visit this "museum at night" is an experience you will never forget. This museum certainly deserves, "all visits and visitors makes swears to come back here every time we're in Guimaraes" (Jose Saramago). Want to try?

A beautiful museum, it is basically the exhibition of church's treasures, but the patio is gorgeous. You can take a combined ticket for the Paço dos duques de Bragança and enjoy both. Definitely worth a visit.

Leans too heavily on religious art. Didn't speak to us. The "patio" (claustro) was the only silver lining — quite beautiful.

It all began with the legendary and extremely wealthy Countess Mumadona Dias, ruler of the Counties of "Portucale" and "Coimbra" in the 10th century, when she commissioned the construction of a monastery - the "Mosteiro de Santa Maria de Guimarães". Later, in the 12th century, the primitive monastery was pretty much enlarged and became known as "Igreja Colegiada de Santa Maria da Oliveira de Guimarães". All these constructions, after many additions and restorations, were adapted to house, in the 20th century, a museum of religious art - the "Museu de Alberto Sampaio", at the heart of the historic center of Guimarães. If time is not a constraint and religious art stands among your interests, the museum has nice collections of sculptures, statues, paintings, engravings, tiles, religious objects and so on! But, anyway, the ancient church and cloisters deserve a visit! Enjoy!

We found this museum to be arguably the best thing about Guimaraes. The first room is a little boring and the modern art exhibition jars a little with the main subject matter of the museum, but the last rooms were full of interesting items, many grouped together. We took the combo ticket (Castle, Palace and Museum) and you really cannot complain about the value.

We paid the 2E extra to get a combo ticket for this, the castle & Braganca. We did not feel this was worth it as we are not interested in religious art. The items were poorly presented.
Come here only if you are interested in religious art and paintings & have an extra hour to spare. But walking around Guimaraes is a better use of your time.
I would skip this museum.

Housed in a former Monastery, whose cloisters one can still visit, Alberto Sampaio Museum has a number of stunning sacred Art pieces, one should not miss. I was particularly impressed by an altarpiece, as well as some of the religious sculptures and frescoes. I reckon that even if the visitor is not an Art or Religion oriented person it may still appreciate centuries of history.

The Alberto Sampaio is a religious museum in the historic centre of Guimaraes in Portugal. We bought are ticket as part of a 8 Euro ticket that provided entry here, Guimaraes Castle and The Dukes of Braganza Palace. We were surprised at how calm and relaxed the museum was and the religious art is oh so intriguing. The attendants are a little creepy though and it is like they are spying on you as they watch to make sure you do not touch!!! Other than that I enjoyed the art and the artefacts and it was well worth the visit.

The museum has a lot of old pieces from older churches in the area that were destroyed. I appreciated that they saved all of these artifacts for future generations to see how amazing things were made by hand. Enjoy the amazing handiwork!

The museum is housed in a former cloister of a monastery, housing some nice tomb in the cloisters. Inside there is a collection of medieval (religious) art. In contrast to Porto, this is a real museum, with a much better collection than the many small (nearly pseudo) musea in Porto. Highlights are the chapel, the gilded wooden altars, the statue of Jesse and the silver gilded altar from 1410. All are very nicely displayed.
