    Pretty town
We had a walking tour around the historic section of Guimaraes. We noted different architecture from other towns around Portugal. There are granite frames around the windows and the apartments had irregular iron balconies. The squares were colorful and very pretty. The train station is a popular attraction with its tilework showing their proud historic heritage.

    Cute and tidy
Tossing between Braga and Guimaraes, picked the latter for the logistics reason. It is a lovely little town with well maintained roads and old buildings. Enjoyed the stroll through the town from the train station to the castle (ruin).

One of the best historical centres we have visited
We travelled here on a day trip from Porto. It is easily managed by train, journey takes about 70 minutes from the Central station. The centre was a delightful surprise. It was one of the best preserved historical centres we have visited. Unlike some places it is also a working centre where people live, plenty of places to eat and everywhere was absolutely immaculate and really quite refined, unlike boisterous Porto. Everywhere is within walking distance and it makes a very good day trip. In hindsight we could have stayed here perhaps on the final night of our 5 night trip, rather that staying the whole time in Porto but on this occasion, everything had already been pre-booked before arriving.

    Beautiful and amazing
The historic center of Guimarães is truly beautiful, as this is the birthplace of Portugal. All the history that surrounds this city is transmitted in its historic center. It deserves a long and fruitful visit, and you can also enjoy a fantastic lunch or dinner in one of the restaurants located in this historic center.

    Stunning medieval town
We had some free time on a trip to this area to walk around the old centre of the town. The town is a maze of tiny alley ways and gorgeous squares. The area is not large but exciting to walk down the twisting streets. There are lots of places to eat and drink and enjoy the atmosphere.

A laid back medieval old town center with great restaurants and stores. Part of the old walls are still standing. A great place to stroll and relax.

Probably our favorite historic center of any town we visited on our trip. Very quaint with great architecture. Plenty to do for a few hours including lunch at a Michelin star restaurant.

If we had discovered this earlier I could easily spend 4-5 days here.
I found the hordes of tourists in Porto too much.

This has far more charm and a lovely slower pace. The quality of the shopping is very high. So much to do. Much cheaper as well.

If I was coming back I’d come here. It reminded me of the Portugal 🇵🇹 I remembered from many years ago.

It is worth at least a day trip but best to stay longer.

If this is your first medieval city, you'll be impressed, but compared to other medieval cities in e.g. Belgium, Poland and Italy, it isn't very exciting, too clean, and quite small.

Guimaraes is a beautiful city and the historic area is a fantastic place to visit with its elegant squares, narrow cobbled streets, castle, palace and just a few churches(!).

It is reasonably compact and easy to walk around, and if you need a breather there are plenty of cafes.
