Fantastic small museum. Stumbled across it and very cheap entry. Loved finding out about the history of pottery in Portugal and Barcelona. Several fascinating exhibitions and video diaries. Very helpful staff.

Great place for pottery lovers
Here we could find unique pieces made by artisans
Here we can work the clay
Here we can take part in workshops
Much more than a museum ... a real school

What a wonderful museum we were there for a couple of hours and I could have stayed for longer. It’s very modern and the ceramics are very well displayed and show the development of the craft over the centuries. There’s a whole variety of pieces from the modern to the old. What I really liked were the videos and the interviews with old people who talked about how they worked years ago and the changes they’ve seen. The videos are in Portuguese but there are excellent English subtitles . One video shows all the stages of getting the clay , puddling it with oxen and then making storage jars and containers and firing them in the traditional way . It was fascinating .
It was completely free and there were lovely toilets and many seats around if you needed a rest. I’d go back again if we had the time.

Museu de Olaria (Pottery Museum, in English) is located in Barcelos, an historical town in the North of Portugal. Here you can see some traditional figures of Pottery and the typical black pottery of the region. Curious. Nice. Interesting.

The museum was created in 1963, it was initially a museum of regional pottery but it has since expanded its scope to pottery from around Portugal. We were pleasantly surprised to find that admission was free and there was no restriction on taking photographs. The public exhibition is contained on the upper level of the two-storey building.
One of the museum’s exhibits features some of the brightly coloured, whimsical works of the pottery-making Baraça family from Barcelos. One of the more famous of these artisans was Ana Baraça, who began making clay roosters from the age of 7 and painted them in her distinctive style.
The second half of the museum provides an insight into the history of the pottery industry as well as a selection of plates, bowls and vases. It is an interesting little museum that is worth a visit.

I visited Barcelos just because of this museum. And it was my highlight of the trip there though I also saw many other interesting things in Barcelos. I'm a ceramicist and I enjoyed the special history of the ceramic culture in Barcelos. It's naive in many ways but that is one of its charms.
