The church rests beautifully on the mountainside, which you can see already from Funchal. The inside is very colourful, however for my taste a little bit too much.

This is a major landmark and is a short walk from the Monte Palace gardens and cable car. It is well worth a visit. It is splendid inside and out. It is generally open, even when a service is underway. The side door lets you...More

This is a small church at the top of about 35 steep steps. What turned us off was the beggers on the steps as well as the door entrance. The inside is not overly decorative. Worth the hike to calm you down before taking the...More

Located quite on top of Monte, you need to climb some 100 stairs to reach this old church which is famous on the Island. There was a procession ongoing when we were there. Next to it you can have a great own brewed beer served...More

Its a nice small church on the top, if you are up in the Monte it is no reason to miss this church. Have a walk around and enjoy the view of the island, perfect time for some selfies and family photos :)

The most important pilgrimage site in Madeira, this lovely 19th Century Church sits at the top of the hill, overlooking Funchal and the sea. It is just a few minutes walk from the Cable car station although it involves either a steepish climb uphill or...More

One of many lovely churches in Madeira. LOTS of steps up to the church. Not very well maintained, not for the faint hearted or those who have vertigo! Interesting statue and local history.

This Church was built in the 18th century when Madeira was rich from wine and sugar. It has a lot of Flemish paintings but we particularly liked the original tiles. It has a painted ceiling to make it look as if there is a dome...More

I believe that the church opens early and each time I have been up to Monte it has been open, even if there are services on. The bell towers and upper floor are open via a door which does not intrude should a service be on... More
