We found this place by accident while travelling back from Valley of the Nuns. You could easily spend an hour or more here because aside from a fantastic view, there's places to eat, buy souvenirs and walk about the landscaped gardens. We were surprised how few people were here and it felt more like a park than a lookout.

We stopped at this scenic lookout as part of a cruise ship excursion around some of the sights of Madeira. Whilst not as spectacular as some of the mountain views in central Madeira, this one offers some excellent panoramic views across the Funchal valley and the surrounding area.
There are a few different vantage points and as we only had a short stop I headed to the large viewing area beside the cross and the interesting trees. Well worth a stop if visiting that part of the island.

I may be unfair in my rating. It depends what you are wanting. The views over Funchal are excellent but can be seen from other places. It was the first viewpoint we went to on our week in Madeira so we were certainly impressed. The immediate area struck me as a little concrete. If you look over the city, try to ignore the ugly (I think so anyway!) cafe just below. We didn't go in so I cannot comment on what it offers. There is also some memorial there, which is no doubt relevant and important but not a major tourist attraction. Do go if you are passing - it generally features on Nun's Valley tours - or have the time but I wouldn't see it as a priority if time is short.

There are many stunning Miradouros in Madeira. Pico dos Barcelos was our first one. We stopped here for a few minutes while doing the Nun's Valley tour with Tino our driver/guide (Madeira Happy Tours). Here you can start to appreciate the beauty of the island and the vast expansion of Funchal atop the nearby hills. Bring your cameras of coarse !!

Visited this viewpoint on the Yellow Bus and also when we had a private car excursion. Did not get off bus so saw only half of view. Then visited with car and saw the opposite side and also were able to use the free toilets.

If you like walking you should walk up to the viewpoint it is a great walk it takes one and a half hour from the city center but it is worth it since you have great view over the city almost the whole time and when you are to the top the view is even better

Good restaurant here. Look over to the two spire church and behind there's a blue house - that's where Christiano was born just next to that.

We boarded a nice bus and stopped first at a picturesque fishing village of Camara de Lobos where we walked near the small port that had local fishing boats and shops. I had a drink of Madeira Wine which I found to be and after dinner sweet drink. We got back on the bus to Cabo Girao which is the 2nd highest sea cliff in the world. It had a an extended overlook with a see thru glass floor. We then proceeded to a very scary bus ride up a curvy mountain to the nun , s valley. The views were fantastic. Our next stop was the Pico dos Barcelos viewpoint which had a 360 degree viewpoint. Our last stop was Eira Do Serrado viewpoint. It was very beautiful with a great view of Fanchal.

we visited this Miradouro on our tour to the nun's valley. Quite nice but just one of many nice views you can have when leaving Funchal to the mountains. Not a must see.

We walked here from the Lido / Monumental area - its around 45/50 minutes of walking however the key point is that a large portion is uphill with some very impressive inclines. The point itself is over 1000ft above sea level so you get an idea of how high you have to get.
If you're fit and used to hill walking then don't use the bus or car and walk up - its a great trek. Otherwise, you'll need an ambulance at the midway point.
The view is spectacular across the island but obviously plan your trip with the weather in mind.
Lovely little cafe on top to get a coffee and bite to eat.
A must visit.

What kind of trees are they please?
Written 27 September 2017

Hello ! Is it true that this is a very god point to see the fireworks for New Year Eve ? Is this open, can I go there for New Year Eve ? Is it a better than downtown Funchal to see the fireworks ? Thanks a lot !
Written 3 December 2016
It overlooks a valley with a town at the end of it. I'm sure Funchal would be better for the fireworks but haven't seen them yet myself.

how do I get there using public transportation?
Written 9 March 2015
Hi, you can use public transport and top up the 'Giro' bus card at various points along the Promenade area, this card can be used on all the Yellow Public Buses around Funchal. The alternative is to catch one of the Tourist Yellow or Red 'Hop on, Hop off Buses and do a scenic Tour of Funchal and the surrounding area, they cost about 12 euros p.p. and depending on which one you catch (Yellow v Red) can last for a couple of days. This is how we visited this scenic point, got off visited the area, waited for the next one, they are usually about every 30 mins or so, not that long to wait. Also gives you chance to see the surrounding area, we went to Camara de Lobo on our trip, but there are variations. Sounds expensive, but in reality you see a lot in a short time-span. If you stayed on the bus with out getting off, it takes about 90 mins. But with hop off, hop on, it's ideal. You can book them at various points along the Promenade area and at the Booking Offices near the Marina. You also get a commentary through cheap ear phones which are available in many languages.
Enjoy, sit back and let the bus take the strain.
