We have always enjoyed the botanical gardens but we're disappointed this time. The bird cage section is closed which means there is far less area to explore. Parts of the checker board flower arrangement were bare and the place seemed a little neglected. This may be typical for the time of year as we usually visit at Christmas/New Year. We... More

We were recently staying in Maderira with my Mother who is in a manual wheelchair, we wanted to go to the Botanical Gardens and arranged a private taxi hire as we had been told that we would struggle on the coach. When we reached the garden we were informed that the paving was not suitable for wheelchairs but we thought... More

We had a nice time in this garden. There are many different flower plants with some exceptional arrangements. There are some steep slopes hence make sure you have the right footwear. If you want to go there without the cable car use the yellow public bus.

These gardens are well kept, and feature a wide variety of plants, but the place can become very crowded with groups of tourists when the cruise ships are in. If that's so, move on to the larger Tropical Gardens, where there is space to spread out

These gardens are in a superb location, with magnificent views over Funchal (and the motorway!). The garden contents are still comprehensive, but the maintenance is terrible. Beware of the paths, which are often a trip hazard and uncomfortable underfoot. Many plants lack labels, e.g. the cactus collection, which is a shame as we would have loved to know what they... We took the local 31 bus directly to the garden entrance and were surprised to find the entrance charge was now 5.50 euro instead of 3 euro. I did think I might see rather more exotic plants and flowers but in early April I suppose it was a bit early in the year. There was a continuous noise from chainsaws... More

Interesting gardens on a spectacular sloping site with views over Funchal. Many colourful flowers, trees and shrubs. Has a very old fashioned museum which could be improved and the toilets certainly need some daily TLC. Get there by two cable car rides from central Funchal via Monte or much more cheaply by local bus. Suggest start visit from the top... More

I don't know what has happened to these once beautiful gardens. Its obvious that the plants and flowers that remain are being tended by someone but it's as if 70% of the gardeners have been fired.Thankfully the horrific area with the poor birds in cages with not much more than concrete to amuse them has now been closed off. This garden is... Spectacular presentation of plants from all over exotic places which seem to be pleased by the local climate. Very interesting views over Funchal city and harbour but the outdoor cafe needs improvement in its offering and cleanliness.
