A nice place to walk around for a couple of hours

This garden is beautiful and well located high up in the mountains. The cost is fairly reasonable, 5 Euro and easily accessible by local bus. Once you are done there is a lovely little cafe overlooking the city and the harbour, a delightful outing.

Much cheaper than the Tropical Gardens, but a lot smaller and certainly at this time of year, not so attractive. The views are good though. We went up on the No 31A municipal bus which stops right outside one of the entrances, but you can also get the 31 and 29.

Worth a visit - we visited in March and there was plenty of colour but I'm sure it would improve as the months go on. A few euros to get in. Lovely views towards the harbour.

Amazing variety of plants and trees. Some steep climbs but manageable. You can avoid this by exiting the gardens via a turnstile at the bottom of the gardens and catching a bus back to town. Will be of great interest to keen gardeners and amateur horticulturalist alike.

We visited this garden by public bus. It stops just outside but we stupidly followed the signs to the cable car up a very steep hill. The entrance was just around the corner!! We loved looking at all the plants. You can see the damage done by last years fire but it didn't detract from the wonderful plants. You can... More

Me and my girlfriend came here during a cloudy day... we though it would be a nice attraction just to spend some time while waiting for the sun to come back. Oh how wrong we were!! This place is absolutely amazing!! There is so much to see (flowers, trees even a fossil museum!) that you could spend a entire day... More

This is a relatively modern botanical garden in a wonderful setting with fabulous views of Funchal and an exciting cable car ride to get there. Most of the garden includes plants and trees from around the world, but there is also an area of Madeira native plants. It's divided into zones, so all the cacti and succulents are together, all... There seem to be plenty of staff and a reasonable admission cost and, undoubtedly stunning plants but equally there is a sense of decapitation. Some parts cordoned off with faded tape. Some parts and steps need attention and even the famous formal gardens have dandelions growing in them on closer inspection. Many water features are empty and forlorn. Think the... More

these gardens are on many different levels ,with steep gradients & uneven paths ,so beware if you are not sure footed. the actual gardens are quite something many different varieties of, trees, lakes and Japanese gardens with Koi Carp. There are mobility buggies available for the less mobile,& when in need of refreshment there are cafes dotted around.
