This is a most unusual museum a 15 minute uphill walk from Funchal town. It’s great value at €3 entrance fee. There’s a peaceful shaded garden area with bits of archaeological remains scattered around and friendly pussycats. The museum itself is on a couple of floors. The top one has paintings and furniture from the 15th to 19th centuries. There’s a fascinating display of miniature cameos dating back to the second century BC. The lower floor has more interesting furniture and artefacts many with intricate decoration. Probably the most spectacular part of the museum is the rooms full of silver many with filigree decoration though. There are QR codes in each room so that you can gain more insight into what you are looking at. Worth the walk up from town even if the other attractions nearby were all closed.

This was probably my favourite museum in Madeira, along with the Universo de Memorias Joao Carlos Abreu.. and luckily the are opposite eachother! After strolling the gardens and museum, I got an amazing surprise when I heard music when I was leaving - and saw that they had unveiled a massive music machine and were playing it! Incredible. This is also close to the fort, so why not spend a whole afternoon in this area and visit the fort, the cafe at Quinta das cruzes, and then Universo de Memorias Joao Carlos Abreu and have a coffee at the tea room?!

I was underwhelmed. The gardens are tired, the plants old; the interiors are clean and cared for, but sparsely furnished. The guide books/signs are not very informative. A lot more could be done with this monument.

History, peace and tranquility as well as a fine house and grounds welcome the visitors to this Manor estate. The house accommodates many fine pieces of furniture, silver and paintings. The collection is well worth visiting. The gardens house several additional features and should be explored too. There is a small but interesting chapel. Enter fee is low and time should be made for this historic collection in a unique setting.

The gardens to the Quinta are free to enter and are quirky with architectural features dotted around. There is a lovely little cafe with cracking views. The Quinta itself is well worth a visit, the room are beautiful with stunning furniture.
