If you're a fan of religious art (and we are) then this is a rare and unexpected gem tucked in Funchal. There is something quite beautiful in taking religious statuary and painting and making it accessible in a museum environment where you can marvel at the detail in the artwork. This museum has a beautiful range of art at a... More

While the Flemish art is perhaps the most (justly) famous aspect of the collection, spare more than a glance for St George & the dragon, the last supper, and the tetracotta St Sebastian.

If you are pushed for time make sure you don't miss the Flemish works of art on the top floor which are said to be among the best in Europe. The rest of the museum has lots of beautiful silver work amongst other things. The sugar trade provided many of these Flemish works in the 15th & early 16th centuries... More

For the small sum of 5 euros you can see some of the most beautiful works of art from the 1500's and the most amazing collection of silver church items I have ever seen.

There are a number of paintings from the Flemish and Portuguese schools taken from island churches. Additionally some very fine religious artefacts such as thuribles and incense boats. Unless you have a particular interest in these, the tour may not be for you.

Interesting building on several floors. As the title suggests full of religious treasures. A few were interesting but it is a sombre place. Items well described in English and Portuguese but no guided tours. Should not really have gone, there are many other more uplifting and interesting religious venues.

This museum is a lovely place to see old statues and paintings of Sacred Art. There's a lot to see, not too much.

Not a large museum but perhaps something for a rainy day (although not many of these in Madeira). Last Supper sculpture particularly interesting.

Once again disappointed by presentation rather than the actual content of the museum. Let's start with the positive. This is a world class collection of art. It is housed in a wonderful building and with pleasant staff. The negatives are that as per other places in Funchal they fail to make the most of what they have got. There is... More
