This old industrial site is just along from the modern Lido and to one side of a small rocky beach where sunbathers lay out on the concrete hard stand above. Cais do Carvao translates to Coal Wharf and it was here that steam ships topped up with coal before onward transatlantic journeys. Interesting to find the original wall has withstood battering of the waves since 1903 when more modern structures have succumbed! Maybe worth a few moments of your time if in the area but nothing more.…

This coal warehouse site has recently been renovated and landscaped with old machinery built by Clarke Chapman of Gateshead on display. Information boards erected. Worth a detour if you are in this area

This is an old pier (1903) that was used by coal burning ships. It was originally called the Pier Wilson as it was owned and operated by the Wilson and Co. Ltd Company. Today much of the much neglected equipment is still here. As well, most often you can find folks with fishing poles in hand, hoping for a good catch.…
