This was a nice drive and a pleasant town but there's not a lot to see. Just stopped and grabbed a few pics of the 3 small traditional houses and had a mooch inside as they've been turned into little shops for tourists. Worth a look when in the area.

Just a few typical houses. An interesting church and a good restaurant. And not much more to see....

Such pretty little places, some are still lived in, others now have a corrugated roof as the wheat traditionally used has become very expensive to import. Lovely place for a picnic or to use the little cafe and just sit in the sun.

We'd done a couple of tourist bus trips around Funchal, the yellow route and the red route, and then decided to take an ordinary bus which leave from an outdoor bus station near the cable car. A local told us that the bus for Santana left at 10 am. We didn't have a clue where Santana was but when we... More

A little out of the way to get to these houses but it was fun to see them. The flowers surrounding in the garden were pretty. Across the street there is a little store that sales the same items as the Funchal market for half the price. A must see if you go to Madeira.

Parked in the centre and walked down to the teleferico. Passed about 5 of the famous triangular houses. Beware the old woman at one of these next to a nice modern house - she invited us in and immediately comes out with a sob story about her dead husband and wanting money! Authentic local village and a pleasant place to... More

We were not sure what we'd find in Santana after reading the reviews, but we were really pleasantly surprised. There are 5 houses in the main area but if you drive around the town, you'll see several other houses too. We met some wonderful people there and had a great time. If you drive, drive up the mountain instead of... More

Located in centre of town next to the town hall by a busy through road. Pros: -Free entry. -Cobbled footpaths. -Five A-frame houses with long thatched roofs - 3 shops (2x tourist memorabilia and 1x weaving), a tourist information desk and a gated house (closed to public). -A sixth A-frame house, the other side of the city hall, selling local... Well worth a visit but not entirely as we expected. The famous houses are there, but only a few. They are quite hard to find as the attraction is not signposted and they are amongst a quite "normal" looking small town.

Nice to see these traditional houses but don't expect too much. There are only 4 houses used as shops. We expected something totally different as these houses are seen in every brochure, we thought this village will contain only traditional houses where local people still live, but most of the houses of the village are nothing special.
