SUNNY and Enjoyably

It is the next town located on the west side from Funchal. Very charming with lots of good restaurants. Feels like it is growing and has great potential. Some very unique and nice looking buildings are abandoned, perhaps after COVID crisis. The town has so much potential.

It was full of expats and foreign couples.

If you stay in Madeira for longer, I think this is a nice place if you don’t want to be in Funchal.

Tourist trap Cafe... avoid Sunny Bar where the service is anything but sunny, the food rubbish and the whole experience just blurghhh. And super expensive too.

Camara de Lobos is a small fishing town 6 miles from Funchal town. It is quite enchanting in the surface, with small side streets and lots of cafes and restaurants to choose from. There is a small cove/ pebbled beach area which is mainly occupied by local fishing boats. It is nice on a sunny day, but can be windy and bleak on a bad day. There isn’t that much to do in the town once you’ve looked around, although there are a couple of nice bakeries. One thing to be wary of in this small town are a couple of cafe/ restaurants that will rip you off. One in particular is the Sunny Bar cafe which I would advise anyone to avoid at all costs, even if you’re desperate.

We started from our hotel near the Lido and walked the coast path, through the tunnel to end in Camara which overall took about 90 minutes. A wander round the village and then on to the hop on/off bus back to our hotel and another well-earned beer.

Nice village, nice views, fishermans playing cards (as they are not allowed to catch fishes now). Worth to stop for 1 hour and walk around.

The most magical place on the island. Absolutely beautiful little streets and craft ship. Lots to see and do. Generally a beautiful little town.

We started at the lido and walked the coastal path, small diversion as the tunnel was closed. Lovely views, I would class the walk as moderate, as there are some fairly hefty climbs. Camara itself is touristy but there are some good things to be found with a bit of exploring. Walk back was a bit harder after food and drink!

Great views and excellent fish lunch. We visited as part of a private Madeira tour and we are glad the guide/driver took us here.

We decided to take a local bus ride to the this lovely quaint fishing village which is just a 30 minute ride out of Funchal with interesting views on the way. It is worth the very reasonable fare to spend a few hours to familiarise yourself with the place that Churchill liked. Make sure to go to the bar where Churchill's statue is and walk the side streets with collages made out of recycled materials. We had a lovely lunch at Deserta Pequena where we were served with excellent starter of Chicken Samosas with almond and carrot sauce. Very unusual and delicious. We had the famous Black Scabbardfish for our main which was cooked to perfection. We were served a complimentary posha liqueur which finished our lunch. I would highly recommend this place to enjoy a tasty lunch.
