Great hike from Fort Guincho up to the Peninha Sanctuary. We started in the sun, and had thick fog when we got to the sanctuary itself. Be prepared for changing weather. The views are gorgeous and hiking there made the experience even better.

Definitely worth the extra few miles if you’re in the area, especially on a clear sunny day. Our flight arrived at 6am and we drove up the coast and made stops at Santuario da Peninha, Cabo da Roca and Convento dos Capuchos before heading into Sintra. Quite the welcome to Portugal.

Great place to stretch your legs, enjoy the gorgeous views, explore and take some nice photos. In early morning no one was around and free to wander about. There were quite a few bees/hornets buzzing around the wildflowers, so do be cautious.

Great spot to discover in the middle of the lost paths in Serra de Sintra. It’s a shame the main building looks abandoned but the site is great, you find some small building till you get to the top and the view is amazing. All the way to Cascais and Guincho beach view.

A thousand times better than the tourist traps in Sintra. The sanctuary is small and you can't go inside but it's free, has a great view and is located along a scenic mountain road and in a beautiful forest. We also only saw two other people during our visit. The whole experience was so much better than the Pena Palace.

Great place to walk around what ever the weather although a fine day did add to the beautiful scenery. Nice displays but a lot of steps and some of the walk ways narow and with more than a 100 ft drop on the other side of the wall it can be a bit exilerating.

If you are already in the Cabo de Roca area, this is worth the short detour. While it's a short distance, it won't be a quick drive, as the roads up to the parking lot are narrow (but well-paved, and safe). On a clear day, though, it's worth it, as the views are stunning, and even in peak season this place had only a few visitors.

The Peninha convent is a beautiful structure that is almost in ruins, but is has some of the best views you can have around Lisbon. You should go by car, as no public transport will get you even close to this place. By car, it is a 20 minute drive from Sintra and an hour drive from Lisbon. You can park there, there is a lot of space, and then you have to walk in a steep road for maybe 5-7 minutes until the top, where you can reach this stunning place. From the top you can see all the coastline until the Espichel cape, and also you have a beautiful forest scenery to the other side of this convent. A lot of stairs in the convent as well, it is closed, but the views from the outside are gorgeous. It is always a bit windy up there, so if you have kids better to cover them in scarfs and winter caps, otherwise they will get very cold. Usually the weather is very uncertain over there, sunny for 10 minutes, and windy and cloudy for half an hour. When it is very cloudy, you cannot enjoy the views completely, but you can always see something, and this something is already magnificent.
Comfy shoes are a must! :) and then, you can take a look around the trails as well. It is a very romantic spot, and it is never crowded :) so you can really enjoy the views!

Now that I know about this place, I will bring friends and family who visit here instead of braving the hordes at Pena Palace. For far less stress (and crowds) you can take in the unique ruins and their beautiful colors, enjoy climbing around on your own, and take in a panoramic view from Ericeira to the north to Setúbal and Lisbon to the south. You can also use this as a picnic spot, or a jumping off point for a hike on the yellow/red coastal trail. The forests surrounding the convent are magical. Bring the pups as well! For the most spectacular colors, go right before sunset. Plus...it's free!
