The Moorish Castle is a military fortification that bears witness to the Islamic presence in the region, and was probably constructed between the eighth and ninth centuries and later expanded after the Reconquista. Overlooking the town of Sintra, it served as a watchtower, guaranteeing the protection of Lisbon and its surroundings.

This is an astonishing castle, for the age, size, architecture and history, plus for the views. It was great hiking around the castle walls and looking out over the city and off to the sea. I love to hike, but even I was glad we took a bus up and down - I've read that it takes 2 hours of... More

This is a well preserved/restored castle which occupies a magnificent location on top of a hill which can be seen from Sintra. There are two sets of defensive walls set well apart so the castle covers a large area. You can walk all of the way around the top of the inner walls and there are great views including the... More

The Castle has amazing views of the landscape and coast! It isn't to be missed. You can walk the length of the castle walls in a relatively short period of time. There are a lot of stairs, but it is well worth the walk.

Mid-September visit. We walked here from Pena Palace which we got to when in opened. It was quite busy by the time we got here. View wasn't that different than what we saw at Pena. We did not walk up to the highest ramparts because I wasn't sure enough of my footing on the way down especially with all the... More

Well worth a visit, the views are breathtaking! Bit scary going up the steps to the towers but well worth it.

Wow. This castle feels like something out of Game of Thrones. Perched on the hill top- we accessed it by the pedestrian hiking trail from the city- centre. A shaded walk with beautiful plants and trees. It was relatively quiet here in September. We chose a lovely spot with magnificent views for our picnic lunch. We easily did the hike,... More

You need to be fairly agile and have a head for heights to walk the ramparts of this stunning castle. It is well worth the effort because the views of the surrounding area are stunning. This was one of the highlights of our trip to Sintra.

The castle itself is not all that exciting to look at and there is really nothing to see inside, but the views, absolutely spectacular and well worth all the waking and climbing that is involved.

Sintra is UNESCO protected and very interesting. It has lots of attractions from street art to castles to churches and palaces. We got there by train from Rossio metro station, 40 minute trip, and then walked an hour to the top of the castle. Buy a 24-hour ticket and you can travel around Lisbon and outside to Sintra, Cascais and... More
