The Moorish Castle is a military fortification that bears witness to the Islamic presence in the region, and was probably constructed between the eighth and ninth centuries and later expanded after the Reconquista. Overlooking the town of Sintra, it served as a watchtower, guaranteeing the protection of Lisbon and its surroundings.

This attraction is not for the faint of heart or those who don't enjoy walking. We hiked all the way up from the train station to the castle (412m above sea level!). When I say "up" I mean it - this is a very steep incline all the way. We really enjoyed the climb, building views, and occasional wrong turn.... More

Gorgeous place, good views, must see place in Sintra in my oppinion. Be prepared to lots of climbing and being out of breath :D There's a cafe with some small snacks to sell there, so you can also eat there.

Definitely worth the climb, or alternatively a tuk tuk ride, up to the castle and ruins. Might get cramped during actual tourist season but in March it wasn't too crowded.

We loved this place. Be prepared for some stairs... You will be rewarded by stunning views and rich history. We combined it with a trip to the Palace of Pena which made for a great contrast.

The Castle is magnificent but beware of the many (many) steps and some through precarious areas....but the view is worth it!! It is neat just to wander on the ancient walls of the Castle and rest at the various spots and take in the scenery.

We took the 434 circular bus service from the station up the hill, the zigzags and skill of the driver was amazing! The bus visits each of the main sites in turn. We got off at the ticket office and start of the path to Moorish castle. The path is fairly easy walking to the castle and very pleasant with... More

An amazing 1000 year old fort built into a rocky hill. The walk to the top tower is long but worth it.

The view is great and the climb up the hill worth it. It is a bit pricy however for the type of services that are offered around. Moreover, the employees at the door were a bit arrogant when I tried to ask them (politely) what the door cost was used for and, and when I asked question to the ticket... More

Getting there. We took the train from Lisbon(keep the card ticket it is reloadable, costs 50c & is standard for metro, train & bus). The 434 tourist bus stops at all the attractions, keep going round the circle on your ticket. The walk from the ticket booth up to the castle is moderately strenuous, or you can pay for the... More
