Neighbourhood: Belém
Belém is the "capital of the Portuguese Discoveries" and a photographer's paradise. You can spend an entire day exploring this neighborhood: monuments (Jerónimos Monastery, Belém Tower, Monument to the Discoveries), museums (Coach Museum, Centro Cultural de Belém) and breathtaking views of the Tagus river will make your visit worth your time. Belém also offers a variety of restaurants and cafes, namely the famous - and delicious - "Pastéis de Belém" (typical Portuguese custard tarts; make sure you buy an extra box of those!). Easily accessible from Lisbon's historic center, Belém is a must-do, especially if you're spending more than one day visiting the Portuguese capital.

This biplane was flown by a Portuguese flier, Sacadura Cabral, from Lisbon, ( near the site of the Belem Tower) across the South Atlantic Ocean, to Rio de Janeiro, in Brazil. The reason:? to celebrate 100th year of Brazil's independence. Hope there were no hard feelings against Brazil for breaking away. The monument is right next to the famous BelemTower on the Tagus estuary. It's a nice green park to stroll in and take pictures!

This is not a must-see but if you are walking along the promenade towards the Belem Tower, this is a small but interesting diversion. The monument is an exact replica of the ‘Santa Cruz’ Fairey bi-plane flown by Gago Coutinho and Sacadura Cabral in an historic transatlantic flight. What is most interesting is that it is located on the same spot where the plane actually took off on 24 March 1922.
The story behind the flight is also interesting. There is a small plaque but you’ll have to look the story up later as there’s not much information about it at the monument. Coutinho and Cabral were the first pilots to fly the 8,400km across the South Atlantic Ocean. At one point a storm forced them to ditch into the ocean, they had to change planes and it was not until 79 days later that they would reach Rio de Janeiro. When you look at the replica plane, it’s astounding to think of the journey they made in such a small aircraft. The thought that they might never return must have weighed on their minds when they took off from here almost 100 years ago.

This is a full size replica of the plane that two Portuguese aviators flew in across the Atlantic to Brazil - over 4000 km. They had to ditch in the sea for a while due to bad weather and it took them 79 days to get across in total. What an achievement!

Monument of the fírst crossing of the south Atlantic by Cabral and Coutinho i 1922. They flew from Lisobn to Rio de Janeiro. They had to change aircraft three times en route because of technical problems, but allways the same type - Fairey III. The all metal monument is a copy of the last plane named Santa Cruz.

Me, my girlfriend and a couple of friends visited Lisbon and passed by the Monument to Sacadura Cabral and Gago Coutinho.
In the neighborhood of Belém, next to the Torre de Belém, the Padrão dos Descobrimentos, we find the statue honoring 2 Portuguese aviators who in 1922 crossed the Atlantic Ocean, leaving Lisbon, in Portugal, to Rio de Janeiro, in Brazil, in the celebrations of the First Centenary of the Independence of Brazil.
I liked it and took some photos. I recommend the visit.

The Sacadura Cabral and Gago Coutinho Monument is located right along the foreshore of the Tagus River.
With the highly visited sites all around it, including the 25 de Abril Bridge (25th April Bridge) to the East and the Padrao dos Descobrimentos (Monument to the Discoveries) and Torre de Belem (Tower of St Vincent) just to the West, this monument is lesser known, but still, a significant attraction.
Sacadura Cabral was a Portuguese aviation pioneer and together with Gago Coutinho, conducted the first flight across the South Atlantic Ocean in 1922, from Lisbon to Rio de Janeiro, in Brazil.
He disappeared while attempting to fly over the English Channel only 2 years later on 15 November 1924.

On the way to view the Tower Of Belém on the waterfront we came across this superb statue of a Fairey seaplane totally unexpectedly. It is not exactly a hidden secret, but given the unusualness of the structure, it is surprising that it is not better known. It was the first flight across the South Atlantic in 1922 and took 79 days. Gago Coutinho was Portugese, and the flight commenced close to the “statue” position.

The monument is dedicated to two naval aviators, Cabral and Coutinho, who conducted the first flight across the South Atlantic Ocean (and the first one using only the astronomical navigation), flying from Lisbon to Rio de Janeiro to mark the centennial of Brazil’s independence in 1922. They used three different Fairey III biplanes and flew in several stages, covering the distance of more than eight thousand kilometers.
