The area
Neighbourhood: Chiado & Carmo
The traditionally trendy "Chiado" (literally, "squeak", the nickname of a 16th century poet) offers plenty of cafes, restaurants and bars where you can stop for a cafe or cocktail, after exploring its streets, shops, art galleries, theaters, museums and viewpoints. It's also the home to the statue of the famous statue of portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa, having is usual espresso at "A Brasileira" as he used to. You can also enjoy breathtaking views of Lisbon from the Elevador de Santa Justa or the Carmo Convent, for example. A commercial neighborhood at its core, especially for its Garrett and Carmo streets, Chiado is to this day a mandatory visit in Lisbon.

- MerrowmumGuildford, United Kingdom1,279 contributionsSteep mini tram ride!Short but well worth it, this funicular/tram “lift” goes up an exceptionally steep patch of hill. The tram itself is covered in graffiti artwork so makes quite a sight! We were lucky that it wasn’t heavingly busy but people were still standing. There are a couple of stops partway along the route if you do want to climb part of the way up, but the stop at the top is a great place to photograph the tram itself.Visited March 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 March 2023
- Michael K991 contributionsLife saver for going from Baixa to the Bairro Alto areaThe ride itself is not that long, but it is well worth it no matter how long the line as one gets tired trudging up the steep slopes in Lisbon. The relatively short ride also means the wait time is not that bad. Besides one can use the wait time to take pictures of the colorful funicular.Visited May 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 June 2023

This little train will take you up the steep hill from Restauradores square to Chiado/Principe Real. Short ride but worth it as the hill is a steep climb. Popular so you have to wait to board. The ride down is less popular. Fun and useful.

Ascensor da Gloria Was a nice little ride in a hilly Lisbon. The street art along the ride was a bonus.

Great wee funicular which is a god send getting up a very steep hill to the Sao Pedro de Alcantara miradouro. The journey itself lasts only a minute or so and is really cheap if you use a Viva Viagem travel card.

This funicular is one of three in Lisbon, Gloria connects Baixa and Bairro Alto and saves your legs the steep climb.
Easiest way to get to the Miradouro and San Roque, but the queue at Restauradores can be obscenely long.
Cars are heavily graffitied

Iconic features of Lisbon include the old funicular trams that climb steep streets at various spots around the city. A favourite amongst tourists due to its central location and graffiti is Elevador Gloria which connects Praca dos Restauradores to the elevated location of Miradouro Sao Pedro.
This line was installed in 1885. The ride is 265 metres long takes just a few minutes to complete. The cost is now €3.80 but that steep price doesn't keep the tourists away so expect to wait in a queue in both directions, especially going up. On the way, you'll see street art lining Calcada de Gloria as well. If you don't want to wait or the ride, you can just walk up and down this steep street as well.

The Gloria funicular (elevador) is a charming rebuilt tram that is now retired and takes passengers on 2 minute rides up and down one of Lisbon’s many steep hills.
On top of the hill you’ll get to Miradouro Sao Pedro that offers fine views to the castle, the cathedral and other picturesque parts of Lisbon.

L'Elevador de Gloria parte da Piazza dei Restauradores ( difronte all'Hard Rock Cafè) ed arriva praticamente a fianco del Miraduro Alcantara (Barrio Alto).

Hello, how crowded is it usually? Is there a long line to get on to go up? We are traveling as a group of 18, so I wonder if it' possible to use it or not.

We were there in March so not to many people. 18 will just about fill the tram but there are two of them on a relatively short climb so not too much waiting time.
