Neighbourhood: Chiado & Carmo
The traditionally trendy "Chiado" (literally, "squeak", the nickname of a 16th century poet) offers plenty of cafes, restaurants and bars where you can stop for a cafe or cocktail, after exploring its streets, shops, art galleries, theaters, museums and viewpoints. It's also the home to the statue of the famous statue of portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa, having is usual espresso at "A Brasileira" as he used to. You can also enjoy breathtaking views of Lisbon from the Elevador de Santa Justa or the Carmo Convent, for example. A commercial neighborhood at its core, especially for its Garrett and Carmo streets, Chiado is to this day a mandatory visit in Lisbon.

    Interesting
Included in the Lisbon card. If you don't have it you will have to pay €4.10. Price somewhat excessive. For this reason, it is worth taking the Lisbon card. In our case, neither of the two elevators that we used to go up and down were painted with graffiti. Which is appreciated. The elevator takes you on a short but interesting and attractive journey to the Miradouro de Sao Pedro de Alcantara. From there you can see the city from a different angle. It's usually full, although in our case we didn't have to queue or wait forever. It's quite an experience.

    Short but interesting tour
While we were in the restaurateurs' square and taking photos, we saw the elevator in the distance and while we were there I told my wife that we should get on to see it since there was always a line to go up the Santa Justa elevator and she doesn't like to wait in lines. We waited just a little to be able to get on (on the second climb) since there weren't that many people, we were able to sit down even though it was a short route that took us to the upper bairro and it caught our attention that they were full of graffiti. Upon arrival you will find several places to rest, eat or have something to drink and the view of San Pedro de Alcántara. It is a work of the engineer Raoul Mesnier du Ponsard and was inaugurated around 1885

    Painful Process to get one
Horribly organized in a sense of public transit. The ride itself is great but the process is painful. The line to get on can be long or short but the process is painful. Most people PAY CASH when they show up at over 4EUR one way. People should really just buy a DAY PASS for 6.80EUR for unlimited transit. It makes no sense. I'm sure Lisbon loves it to make more money but it is so slow when people pay cash to get on. a 3min ride takes 10min to get on.

    Fun ride
It is fun ride up to steep hill. Skip it if the waiting line is long. Perhaps coming down it will be less crowdy. It is cover by metro card, although is more expensive ( ~ 4 euro). Nice view of Lisbon from the top of the hill.

    Relaxed alternative to mountain running
We passed the train by chance on our way to Bairro Alto and spontaneously jumped on, without knowing what the alternative would have been. And that would have been very steep and strenuous. Without having to queue for long and with our LisboaCard in our pocket (free use of the S-Bahn), we were just lucky. It is a historic railway line that goes up a very steep street. There are also only two stops - at the top and at the bottom. Once you get to the top, you are right at the Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara and have a great view of the city. When we got there, there were even a few stalls with snacks, drinks and a beer garden. (I don't know if they are always available). Definitely a worthwhile detour when exploring the city!

    Fun activity
My mum and I purchased a 24 hour travel card from the metro station to use for such activities today. We were there by 10am and there was no queue. The driver didn’t seem to have any job satisfaction and was very miserable! Fun ride up! We decided to walk down. Great little activity.

    Very popular with tourists
It is one of the 4 historic elevators in the city (one, the Santa Justa elevator, is an elevator, while the other three, the Lavra, Gloria and Bica elevators, are funiculars). Inaugurated in 1885, it is the second oldest elevator in the city (the first is the Lavra elevator); it connects praça dos Restauradores with rua de São Pedro de Alcântara, in Bairro Alto/Chiado, a stone's throw from the Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara, with a route of 250 meters and a gradient of around 20%. Initially working with a water counterweight system, it was electrified in 1915. The Elevador da Gloria, like the other funiculars and the historic yellow trams, is part of the collective imagination of Lisbon, but they are also normal means of transport, useful for moving effortlessly in a city full of hills; in Italy, I'm thinking for example of Naples where there are 4 of them, we are already used to funiculars, but these in Lisbon have maintained a vintage look and are nice to look at. In my opinion they should be seen externally because the beauty is precisely seeing them go up or down these narrow sloping streets, perhaps when the two small cabins meet halfway; getting on them doesn't add anything special: they are just means of transport, and very expensive if you don't have the Lisbon Card or a day ticket for public transport; in the absence of these last travel documents, in my opinion it is not worth paying for the ticket and the destination of the funicular can also be reached on foot with the same route as the funicular, both because the slope is never prohibitive and because the distance is in short complex (if the climb scares you, however there are other alternative roads that lead up, perhaps longer but with less slope). Also keep in mind that this funicular is very popular with tourists so, depending on the timetable, it is easy to find a queue (the cabins are small and few people go there).

Lisbon’s Public Transport system, a tourist must experience.
The elevator that has been taking Lisbon locals up and down the steep hills of the city. Each car holds a maximum of 42 persons and in the season these cars are packed with both locals and tourists. The route up hill ends at a very pleasant park with outstanding views over Lisbon. Downhill the rails end near the Metro (a very efficient transport system) at Restauradores. The fare is €4.10 for the return journey, however the handy tourist ‘Navegante’ card is also accepted. This card costs €6.80 for 24 hours travel on any tram, metro or bus. Great value.

    Fun
It’s a Lisbon experience worth having. Ticket included in the Lisboa card (otherwise it's too expensive for what it is). It's fun and it avoids this steep climb to reach the Miradouro Sao Pedro de Alcantara which is worth going there.

Over before it has begun, almost.
Surprisingly short ride. I expected a longer trip with a view on the way up. Runs every 12 minutes. Is there's no queue and you can get a seat then try it. Otherwise, save your money and walk!

It is a clear attraction for tourists, just a few minutes to walk 300 meters at a considerable cost.
Being tourists, we still wanted to have this experience (climb only) to avoid wasting too much money.
Nothing special (in Turin the Sassi-Supergache tramway is another planet).
It is worth reaching the "Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara" terrace from which you can enjoy a wonderful view of the city.

The best and shortest way to get the upper level of city - Bairro Alto/Chiado from Baixa is to take a ride the Elevador da Gloria funicular (a few blocks north of Rossio on Avenida da Liberdade, opposite the Hard Rock cafe) located near the obelisk at Praca dos Restaurados. You can pay the ticket directly to the driver, but this will cost you more or pay less of the difference in price if you use a Viva Viagem card.

This little yellow train will take you up (a ride is 3 minutes) the steep hill to Principe Real district and breathtaking viewpoint Miradouro de Sao Pedro de Alcantara, if you wish to visit it. Short ride but worth it as the hill is a steep climb.
This is not the only funicular in Lisbon, but the most popular and useful it saves your legs from fatigue as well as your energy for the rest of the day. This line was laid in 1885 and is somewhat of historical value. We took advantage of this trip in the middle of the day and there was no queue and we boarded the first train that was waiting for us.

We were at the funicular in the late afternoon and could ride - without waiting. The ticket normally costs €4.10 but was included in our Hill Tram ticket.
The journey doesn't take long and once you reach the top right hand side is a beautiful viewpoint of Lisbon. At the driver you came to pay the ticket cash or by card at the small vending machine in the train.

Short but well worth it, this funicular/tram “lift” goes up an exceptionally steep patch of hill. The tram itself is covered in graffiti artwork so makes quite a sight! We were lucky that it wasn’t heavingly busy but people were still standing. There are a couple of stops partway along the route if you do want to climb part of the way up, but the stop at the top is a great place to photograph the tram itself.

It leaves from Praca do Restauradores arriving at Miradouro de San Pedro de Alcantara in a very short time. It is one of the most famous and photographed attractions in Lisbon. The climb is not very long but it is very steep to do on foot. I recommend taking it both to avoid a useless and tiring climb and because it is an icon of the city. The queue clears up in a few minutes.

The Elevador de Gloria connects Rossio Station to the Miradouro de Sao Pedro de Alcantara in the Bairro Alto district. The price of the single ticket is prohibitive (almost 4€), so it is better to bring a daily pass of public transport and take advantage of that day to take this historic funicular. The journey takes just under two minutes. The view from the top is splendid.

I transmit what a family experienced in this elevator. The experience could have been fantastic, if the elevator attendant had not been so EXTREMELY unpleasant to a group of eight people, two girls, the maternal and paternal grandparents, and the parents. We decided not to file a complaint but situations like this degrade the image of the city. I do not upload photographs of the official in question because we do respect people.

Fascinating, unmissable, very nice, even if it only covers three hundred meters (with two trams), first uphill and then downhill. Door from Praça dos Restauradores to Bairro Alto. The ride lasts two minutes but it's worth experiencing with these vehicles that go up and down horizontally even on a very steep route. The real aim is to bring people to one of the neighborhoods of Lisbon that are elevated compared to others.

- Nostalgic, old and very steep tram
- Instead of walking up, it's definitely worth taking the ride
- It's very busy, the wait can easily be 30 minutes or more
- You can also buy a ticket at the kiosk at the lower stop

Very expensive tourist stuff. €3.80 for one minute of climbing, then descending. It takes 5 minutes on foot.
Rather take a ride on tram 28 or 12. This is wasted money, furthermore with the viva viagem which costs 6.60 per day with all transport and elevators included it makes no sense to pay for the single route.
