The area
Neighbourhood: Belém
Belém is the "capital of the Portuguese Discoveries" and a photographer's paradise. You can spend an entire day exploring this neighborhood: monuments (Jerónimos Monastery, Belém Tower, Monument to the Discoveries), museums (Coach Museum, Centro Cultural de Belém) and breathtaking views of the Tagus river will make your visit worth your time. Belém also offers a variety of restaurants and cafes, namely the famous - and delicious - "Pastéis de Belém" (typical Portuguese custard tarts; make sure you buy an extra box of those!). Easily accessible from Lisbon's historic center, Belém is a must-do, especially if you're spending more than one day visiting the Portuguese capital.

A very grand garden in the center of Belem. You will surely see it as you visit the big tourists sites in this town near Lisbon. A good place to relax after standing in lines.

This garden with its very large fountain is the connection between the monastery and the river front. Nice to walk through and view the size of the monastery.

This is the landscaped area that one passes by to get from Mosteiro dos Jeronimos to Padrao dos Descobrimentos. There is a fountain but at the time we visited, the water was not running and all we saw were just pipes. It was better than nothing but there wasn't anything of significance that one would want to pause and admire.

There was nothing to see. It’s not even a park, just a couple of dead plants and an artificial pond. Not worth visiting. Very disappointing.

Jardim da Praca do Imperio is a 3.3 hectare garden located in between Jerónimos Monastery and the Monument to the Discoveries in Belem. It was opened to the public in 1940 as part of the Great Exhibition of the Portuguese World event.

You will find nicely landscaped grounds and park benches along with a large centre fountain surrounded Portuguese style cobblestone images of 32 floral coats of arms representing the capitals of Portuguese districts, archipelagos and former colonies. There is a large scale cobblestone patter of the Portuguese Shield flanked by two Horses Ponds on the southern side of the park along Ave. da India.

The garden is fairly attractive and a nice place to grab a seat and rest your feet a bit while sightseeing around Belem. Unfortunately, many are briskly making their way between the Monastery, Discoveries Monument and Belem Tower further to the West and pass right through with little time to enjoy the park.

This garden makes for a pleasant stroll between Belem’s big hitting attractions. There is a fascinating little corner, easily missed, where 25 plant species found in the monastery carvings and artwork are being grown, with explanation boards. The garden is well maintained and the central fountain and large pond at the main road side are both very nice.

They are nice gardens and the backdrop is impressive on both sides with the river and the monastery but the fountain was not operating which was disappointing.

This manicured and formal park is directly opposite the Jeronimos Monastery. We walked through it to reach the Discoveries Monument. Designed for the Portugese World Exposition of 1940, it was designed to impress. A series of paths run in increasingly smaller squares, until they converge on a large fountain which is the centrepiece of the park. However I was more taken by the pair of beautiful white hippocampus, sculptures as we left the park. Half-horse, half-fish, they are standing on an elevated pedestal, rearing over a long reflection pool. In Greek mythology, these mythical creatures pulled Poseidon’s chariot. When you are God of the Oceans, how else would you get to and from your underwater palace at Atlantis?
