Lisboa Story CentreMemories of the CityBuilt on the hills bathed by the Tagus, and overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, Lisboa is a fascinating mosaic of memories, stories and influences that still mark the urban landscape of this unique city. The various events that make up its history and some of its protagonists are now presented at Lisboa Story Centre, where all who visit the Portuguese capital are invited to make a trip back in time and discover memories of Lisboa, since its foundation until present day.Located in Terreiro do Paco, this interactive technology-based facility relates the main events in the city from past to present. In a playful and interactive way whilst respecting the historical accuracy that a city with Lisboa's past deserves, this interpretation centre takes visitors on a 60 minute journey through space and time with an audio guide system presenting historically accurate events and dramatic scenes of the city's different eras. The tour is organized into six main sections: Lisboa: Myths and Realities, which covers the River, Land, Sea, Sky, Early mythology, settlers and conquerors and the City Walls. This is followed by the section Lisboa: Global City, which presents the Cosmopolitan City, the Warehouse of the World, Beyond the Horizon, the Flying Priest, Magnificent City, Death and Politics and the Church. The section focusing on November 1755, All Saints Day, addresses the earthquake and the city in ruins, passing on to the core vision of Pombal, who introduces Modern City Planning in the postearthquake period and the Reconstruction of the City. And finally, the Terreiro do Paco section, which focuses on the Public Square: Politics and Leisure. The 1755 earthquake is shown in a sensory theatre experience that captivates all visitors. You can extend your tour with a visit to the 1st floor where visitors can play with an interactive scale model that recreates the centre of Lisboa, allowing you to visualise predetermined events and the places where they occurred.

We all really enjoyed this Story centre, which gives a wonderful context to the history of Lisbon. I learnt a lot! The headphone commentary is well-pitched, just slightly repetitive but it has to cover all audiences, and the visuals are fun. The earthquake room is worth seeing on its own. It helped us understand Lisbon and Portugal much better in... More

Ancient Lisbon is full of stories, legends, ceremonies, and history, all of which together create a character, something wider than one can perceive from a tourist-touristy tour of desirable sites, impressive and pleasant as it may be. The Lisbon Story Center bridges visitors and the history of Lisbon, using modern means - through multimedia displays that reveal selected and interesting... More

I am Portuguese and I live in Lisbon. I knew some Lisbon history, but I learned a lot from the visit. The audio guide is automatically activated whenever we advance in the exposition. It takes patience and hope they just tell the whole story of the part we are in... And you will learn a lot about Lisbon! UNMISSABLE!!!

This interactive experience was a great way to start your visit to Losbon. The tourist info centre too was very helpful. Pay an extra euro and go to the top of the arch nearby for amazing views of the city and River!

Great intro to Lisbon history, presented with good display and audio. Never knew about the earthquake and tsunami - that alone was worth the attendance. Free entry with lisbon card. Go early - line does form. Right on main plaza, easy access.

We really enjoyed this place. It gives a great introduction to Lisbon so history and our young kids liked it to. It's modern and we'll run.

We had planned a busy day of sightseeing in Belem on our first full day in Lisbon, but found ourselves at the back of an enormous queue for Tram 15. We decided to spend an hour in the Lisboa Story Centre nearby, and hope that by the time we came out, the queue would have gone down. We had Lisbon... More

Staying in Baixa, Rossio & Restauradores

Neighbourhood Profile
Baixa, Rossio & Restauradores
A pending candidate to become a World Heritage Site, Lisbon's downtown (the "Baixa Pombalina", or simply "Baixa") is a perfect example of anti-earthquake construction, having been rebuilt following the 1755 earthquake by the famous Marquês de Pombal (hence its name). Its offer is vast: restaurants and cafes in Rossio and Restauradores, outlets and shops in the Áurea, Augusta, Prata and other famous streets, the imponent Praça do Comércio and its Arch, the luxury shops along the Avenida da Liberdade, this is the beating heart of the city center. The Baixa also grants easy access to trains leading to Sintra, the trams that go around the Castle hill, old neighborhoods or even take you to Belém, and Lisbon's traditional restaurants and cafes. Considering a visit to the Fashion and Design Museum (free entrance) and don't forget to try the famous liquor, "ginjinha"!
