The monument is under renovation, so it doesn't look too good right now, but the area is still a nice place to visit and hang around.

We visited here while wandering around Belem. It was slightly disappointing it is currently covered in scaffolding while work is carried out on it. However, being a less busy time of year for tourism this is probably the best time for work like this to be carried out. However, even covered in scaffolding it's still an impressive structure.

It is in the Belém área. The monument itself is great! The view on the top of the monument is super!!!

We saw this monument from a distance on our visit to Belem. We decided not to trek over to see it and instead go to the Torre de Belem and spend more time there. The design doesn't appeal to me.

I did not realise how tall this structure was until I got there. Great place to get a superb view of the coastline both ways and great views of neighbouring Belem. Don't miss it

Have wanted to see this monument for many years, but when we arrived in Lisbon the whole thing was covered in scaffolding and looked dreadful. Perhaps we will return. Didn't know also that you can go to the top of this (when the renovation is complete)!

It's really enjoyable place to be visited To see Lisbon skyline The weather must be good in order to be up on the 6th floor not to be visited in a rainy day

We visited in October and were disappointed that the monument is currently under repair and covered in scaffolding. It is not open for visitors. We enjoyed walking around the area and seeing the exterior inlaid map that shows the explorations undertaken by 15th and 16th century sailors. Still worth a stop while in the area exploring other attractions such as... More

The Monument was behind a network of scaffolding, so really a waste of time when I visited.Pictures and guide books indicate it is interesting and tells the story of Portuguese Navigation... BUT I must judge it on my visit AND it was of course built by Salazar as a Folly to deliberately distract the Portuguese people.

This monument is obviously being restored like most of Lisbons roads so it was difficult to assess its full effect as it was covered in scaffold. Interesting to see though.

Staying in Belem

Neighbourhood Profile
Belem
Belém is the "capital of the Portuguese Discoveries" and a photographer's paradise. You can spend an entire day exploring this neighborhood: monuments (Jerónimos Monastery, Belém Tower, Monument to the Discoveries), museums (Coach Museum, Centro Cultural de Belém) and breathtaking views of the Tagus river will make your visit worth your time. Belém also offers a variety of restaurants and cafes, namely the famous - and delicious - "Pastéis de Belém" (typical Portuguese custard tarts; make sure you buy an extra box of those!). Easily accessible from Lisbon's historic center, Belém is a must-do, especially if you're spending more than one day visiting the Portuguese capital.
