We weren't sure whether to go in, but well worth the venture. The views from the top were exceptional.

Built in the 12th century, the church was built adjacent to a monastery, both now part of the National Pantheon, with the church hosting the remains of former kings and other national figures of Portugal. The monastery has been turned into a very informative museum which allows access to the beautiful architecture and a great many treasures of national importance.... More

The church itself is a really nice Mannerist building, the interior however is quite unadorned apart from a nice Baroque Altar and a really nice 18th century pipe organ. The monastery (price is 5euro) has beautiful azulejos scattered all over, has a cistern that used to keep the water for the complex, a beautifully decorated sacristy made with different marbles,... Took a tuk-tuk from the castle to Sao Vicente's and this in itself was a wonderful experience. I found the church light and bright but the real gem is the blue-tiled cloisters which feature over 30 of La Fontaine's fables. For the small sum of 5 euros I spent 2 pleasant hours and took some wonderful photos. It is only... More

After Lisbon rush and noise, climb up to the bell tower and take a breath! You will find it relaxing and worth a visit. It's quiet and there is a great view above Alfama rooftops, Pantheon and the river. Visited twice and still recommended. Take a walk in Alfama spiral streets, maybe also visit Feira da Ladra second hand market... More

This is not one of the churches on the great list of things to see, but I think it is worth the time to stop if you are in this part of town. It is quiet and huge. It's free to get in. I just can't see how any churches in the United States compare. These churches are huge and... More

Staying in Graca & Sao Vicente

Neighbourhood Profile
Graca & Sao Vicente
You can be thankful that most common travel guides don't mention Graça and São Vicente that often. Part of Lisbon's historic center and "Old Town", they feel like independent villages in the capital's center, and more untouched than Alfama. Amazing views, restaurants and parks, as well as important monuments like the S. Vicente Church and the National Pantheon, make this a spectacular option for those looking for a more tranquil walk-around in the center of Lisbon. Graça has been the choice of many younger people over the past years, both nationals and expats, given the cozy feeling of the neighborhood and its hidden secrets.
