Sao Carlos Opera House, sadly, does not seem to enjoy as much publicity as many of the other Lisbon attractions in the tourist schedules and – apparently due to the Portuguese economic situation – there are currently less performances than normal. Their website is only in Portuguese. In our fortnight in the city the only opera performances were of the... More

Modeled after Milan's Teatro alla Scala but smaller, this is where the opera lovers come to many times during the year. Not a major opera venue, but a respected one.

One evening we stopped at the Restaurante Teatro Nacional de Sao Carlos and had dinner below the theatre. The restaurant has an Italian and Portuguese flare with wonderful food and service. We ate outside at one of the many tables facing the Sao Carlos square. We enjoyed both the Lasagna and the Salmon Ravioli with lemon sauce. There were also... More

Staying in Chiado & Carmo

Neighbourhood Profile
Chiado & Carmo
The traditionally trendy "Chiado" (literally, "squeak", the nickname of a 16th century poet) offers plenty of cafes, restaurants and bars where you can stop for a cafe or cocktail, after exploring its streets, shops, art galleries, theaters, museums and viewpoints. It's also the home to the statue of the famous statue of portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa, having is usual espresso at "A Brasileira" as he used to. You can also enjoy breathtaking views of Lisbon from the Elevador de Santa Justa or the Carmo Convent, for example. A commercial neighborhood at its core, especially for its Garrett and Carmo streets, Chiado is to this day a mandatory visit in Lisbon.
