We had already visited this museum some 10 years ago with our kids and we all loved it at the time. We decided to visit it again as we were staying in a small hotel just in front of it (Palácio Ramalhete). First good surprise:...More

This museum offers a good collection of artifacts from medieval times, paintings, and collections of objects from the formidable trade ports around the globe.

It’s a very big museum. If you want to see everything, you need at least 3 hours. But l was more interested in the medieval paintings. There are sone master pieces as well like Bosch, Dürer, Rembrandt, mostly religious art. There is a nice garden...More

The only place where you can see Triptych of the Temptation of St. Anthony, amazing painting, is Lisbon. I was told it doesn’t travel ever. No crowd, no lines, totally civilized art enjoyment as it is supposed to be. There is a very nice little...More

Lovely garden for coffee outside with good view over the sea. The museum was surprising as 90% of the museum, paintings, statues and sculptures are dedicated to religion. Not what I expected of a museum.

I liked most the section on the Portuguese discoveries and the temporary exhibition The Islands of White Gold (= sugar of Madeira). MNAA cannot compete with the top national museums of Europe since the number and quality of the works of the internationally most famous...More

I think Ancient Art is the wrong name of this museum as it deals heavily in Medieval and Renaissance Art, that being said, its collection is excellent. I went 2 hours before close and was rushing with 15 minutes to spare as the galleries were...More

The title of the museum in my mind is misleading. The collection is based on art from the Renaissance through to the Romantic movement. The museum owns the Temptation of Saint Anthony by Jheronimus Bosch, 1500. There are few paintings by Bosch to see. This...More
