We stayed here for nearly three weeks, it is central to everything and has the most charming old streets and with the famous tram 28 rumbling through adds to the character of this old Alfarma district. Some of the best restaurants and little charming bars are found here too, this is a must experience in Lisbon!

Our guide was quite knowledgeable about the history, stores, with good prices and flea markets in the Alfama. He more importantly knew how to negotiate the labryinth of streets. I felt like I was on the set of the movie "Blade Runner"

We took a crowded tram up into this area, enjoyed the views and then wandered down alleyways and staircases. Very interesting and uncrowded.

I love getting lost in this area. Gorgeous and never gets not going looking at the view, buildings, and local Tascas

Don't miss to come up here! We were supposed to take the tram, but it was so crowded that we decided to take a Tuk Tuk instead. That was ingenious I can tell you! We could see a lot and the drivers (we had three different drivers on different tours) told us a lot that was worth to know!

As the upper terminus of the quaint historical tramcars servicing the Castilho Heights, this impressive lookout dominates the view in every direction, is adjacent to the ancient castle and many typical local eateries cramming the fascinating narrow alleyways.

Don't visit Lisbon without visiting this neighborhood, particularly in the evening. There are narrow, winding, steep streets. But around every corner is a festival of music, dancing, grilling, eating, drinking, and people of all ages outside enjoying themselves.

Go for the Lisbon walker tour. We have taken similar tours in Denmark and Sydney, being impressed by the quality of the guide and information given to us.

We stayed in Alfama for 4 nights and just across a famous fado place- lovely place to live, if you don't mind the music in the late evenings. Much better than spending on posh hotels (if you are the exploring type).

Staying in Castelo, Alfama & Mouraria

Neighbourhood Profile
Castelo, Alfama & Mouraria
Explore narrow streets and alleyways, small cafes and, of course, the internationally acclaimed Fado music. The earth-shattering Great Earthquake of 1755 destroyed most of the city but the contiguous neighborhoods of Mouraria, Castelo and Alfama remained standing to this day. These neighborhoods represent Lisbon at its historical best. The cool breeze of the Tagus river will take you up the hills to the sound of Fado, where you'll discover the best "tascas," eat delicious fresh fish and drink great wines. Discover hidden viewpoints and ancient traces of other civilizational ruins in the heart of the Portuguese capital. These are centuries-old neighborhoods that will welcome you to the very best of old Lisbon culture.
