No expense was spared when they built this masterpiece of Manueline and Gothic architecture in 1502, which was inspired by Vasco da Gama who is buried here with other great navigators of the past.

Neighbourhood: Belém
Belém is the "capital of the Portuguese Discoveries" and a photographer's paradise. You can spend an entire day exploring this neighborhood: monuments (Jerónimos Monastery, Belém Tower, Monument to the Discoveries), museums (Coach Museum, Centro Cultural de Belém) and breathtaking views of the Tagus river will make your visit worth your time. Belém also offers a variety of restaurants and cafes, namely the famous - and delicious - "Pastéis de Belém" (typical Portuguese custard tarts; make sure you buy an extra box of those!). Easily accessible from Lisbon's historic center, Belém is a must-do, especially if you're spending more than one day visiting the Portuguese capital.

    Magical!
This place is magical and worth the long line in June to see. When we arrived shortly before out ticket time, we still had about an 1.5 hour wait (and the line was very long, stretching around the corner of building). But we had a great time chatting with tourists around us while waiting and enjoying the stunning exterior views. Note: inside does not take very long to see, maybe 30 minutes to an hour for the monastery alone, so take your time and enjoy (I rushed a little thinking was bigger inside). Also, go to church (separate but short line) to see it's interior and the Vasco da Gama tomb.

Very impressive monastery but be prepared to queue a while
Like a few of the reviews on here, the queue system could have been better organised and it was not obvious what we were queuing for. You have to wait a while to enter the church then do it all again for the monastery part. It is still very impressive inside and you can see a few tombs including Vasco da Gama. But it doesn’t take long to tour the monastery part, it is over quite quickly

    Good experience but long lines
My first thing would be buy a Lisbon ticket. If you do, you go right in line. Next expect long lines unless you get there early or close to closing time. The monastery itself is beautiful and a true work of art. Everything was breathtaking. If you want to go to the church it's free but have to get in line. The church is where Vasco De Gama is laid to rest.

    Five days in Lisbon
We took a Tuktuk tour on our first day! It was the best thing we did and it gave us an overview of the city. We found our tour guide helpful and we went back to many of the places he suggested. Loved the city and we took tons of photos. Enjoyed the food, the atmosphere and the wine and ginja. Spent a day exploring Sintra and surrounding areas. Stunning! Make sure you get tickets on line for the palace and get tickets for the bus up to the palace, and back down, it is a lot of hill lol Wear good footwear as the cobblestone, while pretty can be treacherous if you have balance issues. I’m 70 but did really well with the hills and walked everywhere. Don’t hesitate to visit any part of Portugal. Will go back soon. Loved it beyond words!

    Beautiful architecture
Beautiful inside as it is on the outside. Wonderful architecture throughout and very peaceful. Go as early as possible as line to get inside and the wait are long if you go later in the day. Also buy tickets ahead if time so you can get in the queue with tickets in hand.

    Amazingly beautiful
The Santa Maria Church is next to Jerónimos Monastery. It has a different entrance and line to get in. Unlike Jerónimos Monastery, there is no charge for entrance. Like many of the churches in Europe, It is beautiful inside. The architecture is amazing. A must see since if you are already there to see Jerónimos Monastery.

    Jeronimos
Jeronimos monastery is one of the attractions to see while in Lisbon Portugal! It’s close to the Belem tower as well as the Pasteis de Belem. There’s two different entrances one for the archaeology side which I loved. You can get some good photos there of the courtyard. The other side is the church which is gorgeous. The best way to get tickets is to scan the QR code that they have in the front and then go ahead and purchase the tickets. Or just purchase them in advance. The people at the entrance and the line control people are definitely not the nicest. That was pretty much the only bad thing that we ran into here. But otherwise definitely go. It is a sight to see! And you might even run into some dancers outside, as well as piña colada stands!

    Monastery Slay.
This architecture slayed the house down. Or should I say slayed the monastery down. We loved it!! The only pitfall was having to queue for over an hour in the hot sun. I got very very sunburned on the tops of my feet! Ouch! And my friend now has a permanent representation of his tank top tattooed on his body by the sun. This part was hard I'll admit. But! Once we got inside it all became totally worth it. And what's so wrong about a permanent tank top anyways? It was not too crowded on the inside either so that was lovely! We took some slayer pics! Would totally recommend! Beautiful location as well! We did not, however, see any monks, which I really would have liked. So don't get your hopes up for that. All in all a lovely day!

    A must to visit
The queue to go in (with online booking and Lisboa card) took 1.5 hours. So even if you go early it would take you about 20-30 min wait. But it was well worth it (better than sintra and bolsa palace). The monastery is so beautiful, so nicely decorated with a mix of manueline, Neo gothic and romantism. It is such a sight to view, at one spot for few min. Interior was kept pristine and the ceiling art took my breath away. The arches, the tunnel and the wall tiles.. simply worth the wait. It is a distance from Lisbon central, but by visiting here you can also visit the Monument of Discoveries, Belem tower and try the Pastiel de Belem within metres away. My journey is by taking 15E bus from Figueira Square.

    how do ya get in
ok....i'm confused after reading the reviews. didn't see a place to pay. there must have been a way. we were left in the lurch. all we saw was the church. i'll admit we got there late so that must have decided our fate. from inside and out we got some beautiful pics. but doing the rest would have given us our fix.

Nice monastery, but waited over 1h30 right at the opening hours (9:30). Although it was nice, the visit was very short and not worth such a long wait. Make sure to buy tickets in advance. The cathedral next door is free, but is also over 1h wait.

Outside the same as inside. You must definitely come very early. I had the Lisboa card, but I still had to wait in a queue for approx. 1 hour. It's not worth the entrance fee of approx. 10€. I recommend the Lisboa card, with which you have free acces to every single monument or museu. I spent 50€ for a pass for 3 days. Without it you can easily spend more than 50€ only on one day of visiting several sites. So I was fortunate to have my card. You can also travel for free by train, bus, tram or metro. I definitely recommend the metro. Taxi is also cheap when you are in a hurry or exhausted after a full visiting day.

Very long wait even if you get there early. It has a nice courtyard but not much to see. Use Lisbon card to get in free. The line is long all day unti 4pm. Day we went there was a strike so they closed at 4pm

Beautiful monastery with stunning architecture. Really worth a visit, we didn’t manage to go into the church next to it but have heard good things about it.

We went later in the day (15:30) and the queue was significantly less than earlier in the day. It took around 15 minutes to queue whereas earlier in the day it was nearly 2 hours to wait.

Reasonable price and free toilets inside. Really recommend but make sure to go later in the day.

Worth the visit. Queued about 1hr 15 but wasn’t too hot and went quickly. We spent about 1hr inside. Beautiful. Definitely recommend going. Wires looked quieter in The afternoon.

We went to the monastery early morning, expecting to get in within a reasonable time. The line was ridiculously long, however, just including the people with pre-purchased tickets. We ended up bagging the idea of going inside and just enjoyed the fabulous exterior. I would rate the place a 5 on appearance (what we saw), but a 2 on visitor flow management. Unless you have hours to kill aimlessly in line, better to skip entry inside and visit an alternative attraction.

I will say this about the monastery, it was worth the admission price, but not at all worth your time. We had purchased the earliest time slot at 9:30, but did not get in till almost 11. For an 1 1/2 hours in line you will see a single courtyard and 3 rooms. It is very beautiful inside but there is so much hype around it that the wait makes it not worth your time. You are better off going to other places for the same amount of beauty. If you do want to go, do it through a tour group. They all got priority entry and see both the church and monastery. That was one big reason the line takes forever, they also wait for those huge groups to exit before admitting the smaller groups. I promise if you go outside a tour group you will regret it. You can see similarly beautiful places in Lisbon with a fraction of time spent.

Frederico with the Cooltours Lisbon was an excellent tour guide. Very knowledgeable about the history of the Jeronimos with a background of the economic , cultural, and religious origins. Also amazing tour inside with insight into the art history and meaning of the architecture and sculptures. Don't miss it -- Also we AVOIDED THE LINES with this tour. This is the place with the most lines in Portugal except Sintra.

Not a great experience. We bought tickets online with a half an hour time slot. We got there ten minutes before and were directed to the back of a very long queue - all of whom had pre-booked tickets. Stood for over an hour in very hot weather with no seating. We went into the monastery which was stunning but we were so hot and bothered we had a quick look before heading to the church which is part of the same complex. When we got there we could not believe we were directed outside to queue AGAIN to get into the church. I reckon it would have take us the best part of an hour to get into the church so we didn’t bother. A right shambles!
