The Gulbenkian complex features a museum that houses a magnificent private collection of Persian art, Egyptian sculptures, and paintings by the Old Masters. Calouste Gulbenkian's collection of paintings includes works by Bouts, Van de Weyden, Lochner, Cima de Conegliano, Carpaccio, Rubens, Van Dyck, Frans Hals, Rembrandt, Guardi, Gainsborough, Romney, Lawrence, Fragonard, Corot, Renoir, Nattier, Boucher, Manet, Degas and Monet. A favourite sculpture of his was the marble original of Houdon's famous Diana, which had belonged to Catherine of Russia and which Gulbenkian purchased from the Hermitage Museum in 1930.

The museum is one of the best I have ever visited. It is the essence of a well curated and displayed collection. The building is an exceptional space for displaying art, each piece in the collection is top quality and the thoughtfulness with which they are displayed stands out. This is not a crowded museum... the pieces are well spaced... More

Small museum full of artworks. 10 minutes by car from downtown. The works are not all excelled, but the jewels of Lalique are extraordinary workmanship and creativity. Some forniture have been very apprezziate.

The magnificent but understandable collection is beautifully and spacially displayed, allowing you to take in everything without the overwhelming size of some of the larger institutions. Entrance fee 5 euro, but a discount for students! Most of the artifacts are of Mesopotamia, those which are not are of a similar style: very old, very interesting, and also very old.

As we entered I realized what a wonderful and varied collection they have. I visited with my toddler ( that is very patient and well behaved) and my 9 year old. We admired all of the masterpieces they... More
