The Gulbenkian complex features a museum that houses a magnificent private collection of Persian art, Egyptian sculptures, and paintings by the Old Masters. Calouste Gulbenkian's collection of paintings includes works by Bouts, Van de Weyden, Lochner, Cima de Conegliano, Carpaccio, Rubens, Van Dyck, Frans Hals, Rembrandt, Guardi, Gainsborough, Romney, Lawrence, Fragonard, Corot, Renoir, Nattier, Boucher, Manet, Degas and Monet. A favourite sculpture of his was the marble original of Houdon's famous Diana, which had belonged to Catherine of Russia and which Gulbenkian purchased from the Hermitage Museum in 1930.

More impressed than we thought we would be based on pictures in the guide books. A wide and varied collection of paintings, textiles, china, glass, sculpture and modern art. We spent a good couple of hours there and could have stayed longer but for the need to get to the airport for our flight home. Lovely gardens too.

Here you will find the wide collection of Calouste Gulbenkian which gave it all to his election home Portugal. The exhibits are more or less chronologically ordered and give you an impressively insight of four thousand years of art and crafts. In the rooms 1-3 you will find the antique, in the rooms 4-6 treasures from the east, in the... More

We had never heard of the Gulbenkian Museum until we were checking out the neighborhood where we had made dinner reservation. We were unfamiliar with the northern Lisbon neighborhood. Apparently Calouste Gulbenkian was an extremely wealthy businessman (probably a billionaire in his day) who was a generous patron of the arts. On Sunday afternoons the Museum is free after 2:00... Founder's collection is impressively broad. Ceramics, coins, rugs, furniture, sculptures, paintings and jewelry are all displayed. We sent on a free Sunday. No real wait compared to the rotating exhibit. It is definitely worth a visit. The cafe and grounds are nice as well.

Just 4/5 metro stops from the center, this museum will satisfy any art lover. The buildings are placed around a wonderful garden that worth visit only by itself, but the collections are amazing. The Portuguese modern art collection is surprising, but the Founder Collection is simply wonderful... Pieces from Egypt, Ancient Greek and Rome, Medieval ages, Orient, European paintings, Louis... First of all we were arriving just 2 hours before the free entrance began (sunday), and it just not a good feelinng. .But that said, the museum was for us a bit disappointing - and we had went to a lot off museums. The display is not very interesting, and not worth the money. best thing is the garden outside... More

This has to be one of the finest collections of collections in the world of superb coins, rugs, paintings, porcelain, sculpture, glass. Gulbenkian only acquired the best. The items are beautifully displayed and explicated. We were glad to have started with the modern art collection, which is equally well curated and situated.

The history of the establishment of the museum is, in itself, fascinating. The exhibits were quite different than most of the museums that we have visited and there were exquisite silver scuptures, coins that were unique, and art that we had not been exposed to in the past. We ended up spending almost four hours there, having anticipated perhaps two... More
