I am not an art critic and I cannot objectively judge the artistic quality of the work, but in my opinion it is the most beautiful monument of this type that I have seen in the city. Imposing (about 40 meters high) and grandiose, inaugurated in 1934, it rises in the center of a vast circular pedestrianized area in the square of the same name, where Avenida da Liberdade ends and Eduardo VII park begins. The entire pedestrianized part, apart from some green flowerbeds, is paved and there is no shortage of the usual light and dark inlay compositions. The monument rests on a stepped base on the southern side due to the slope of the square; on this base, surrounded by monumental iron and stone lampposts, stands the pedestal which, very large at the base, is then reduced to form a sort of column, above which is the bronze statue of the marquis, portrayed standing, with a lion and his gaze turned towards the city center and the Tagus. But it is not the statue that attracts attention, rather the complex stone pedestal, with its scenographic decoration and complex composition, especially in the lower part, where there are numerous statues, sculptures and high reliefs in general. Also worth seeing is the rear part, where there is also a small classical temple and below, resting on a small and simple pedestal, a seated female bronze statue representing "Lisbon reborn" after the earthquake of 1755.

This big statue is dedicated to the famous man who supervised the rebuilding of the city after the disastrous earthquake. You will find it in the middle of a big traffic circle with some landscaping. Hotels and office buildings are around.

This huge statue the Marquis de Pombal dominates one end of the Avenue da Liberdade. This is by far the most impressive monument on the avenue, as it should be. Sebastiao Jose de Carvalho e Melo, also known as the Marquis of Pombal, was instrumental in completely rebuilding (and redesigning) Lisbon after the devastating earthquake of November 1, 1755.

This huge statue of the guy who rebuilt Lisbon after the earthquake dominates a huge traffic circle. Some very grand buildings around it, including our bank HQ. Not especially pretty, very difficult for a pedestrian.

During our first day in Lisbon, my wife and I enjoyed a nice walk along the Avenida da Liberdade. Before walking back to our hotel, we walked up to Marquis of Pombal Square. In the center of the square is a large monument which pays tribute to Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, the prime-minister who ruled Portugal from 1750 to 1777. He was also known as 1st Marquis of Pombal and was considered a powerful leader. This monument expresses the reputed powerfully commanding presence of Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo.
During my time in Lisbon, I also learned that this monument’s tribute is also special in that it has Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo’s image facing Baixa Pombalina. This is the area of Lisbon that was rebuilt under his direction after the 1755 Lisbon earthquake.
This square has quite a bit of traffic. However, there are stop lights which allow pedestrians to safely cross over to visit this magnificent monument.

A beautiful statue in the center of the square depicting Sebastiao Jose de Carvalho e Melo known to everyone as the Marquis of Pombal. The bronze statue of the Marquis designed by Adaes Bermudes, Antonio Couto and Francisco Santos was placed on a tall column. The Marquis was a powerful prime minister who ruled Portugal from 1750-1777. He was instrumental in rebuilding Lisbon, which was damaged by the earthquake. The figure is facing the Baixa district, which was rebuilt under his supervision. A great figure of merit in Portuguese history is beautifully honored with a magnificent statue in the square named after him, Praca do Marques de Pombal. Magnificent and impressive, it is worth taking a close look and observing all the sculptures that make up the statue.

Very beautiful, monumental statue of an important character in Portuguese history, but don't plan your trip for that. Take advantage of the numerous connections at the foot of it to take a 15-minute break and admire it.
Within a 100m radius: Edward VII park, Amalia Rodriguez garden, Estufa Fria (tropical greenhouses), bus connection to Belém and the Jeronimos monastery, connection between blue and yellow metro.

Here is it in the middle of the huge traffic circle. The circle is so large that it is hard to walk all the way around. We had a banking appointment here so we enjoyed the view from an office window. It's a big statue dedicated to the guy who rebuilt the city after the earthquake.

This statue commemorates the achievements of a great man of Portuguese history. He was an important and very competent politician who was entrusted with fixing many economic and other problems during the late 18th century. He was particularly instrumental in the reconstruction of Lisbon after the 1755 earthquake. The statue is at the top of a very tall stone base which also bears some interesting symbols. The elaborate monument can only be reached safely through an underground pathway. The location is in the middle of a very wide and busy intersection in the city.

The statue in the centre of a large roundabout honours Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, 1st Marquis of Pombal, who lead the rebuilding of Lisbon after the destructive earthquake of 1755.
