The area was rebuilt after 1755 - except the cathedral on the hill which was left as monument to the earthquake and the victims.
A magnificent river front square with 3 sides taken up with spectacular buildings, and 3 avenues leading off it into 2 more squares and then the Avenue of Liberty.
Great for walking relaxing and shopping.
The heart of Lisbon.
Views of the Moorish castle and the cathedral make it marvelous location.

Nice touristy area. Good to walk around. During Christmas Season there is a lot of activity and good decorations with lighting at night that makes it an interesting stroll. Prices are on the high side as it’s a touristy area. Best to avoid accommodations there as it’s crowded snd noisy.

Having never been to Lisbon before I had no idea what to expect, however when we started exploring the streets on foot we discovered a wonderful vibrant city. Full of churches , cobbled streets and restaurants, lots to do and lots to see.

Miradouros in the Alfama area are nice, but there are lots of uphill walking. Baixa is relatively flat and less exhausting for one to explore. There are many worthwhile attractions like pracas with statues of kings and Arco do Triunfo. It is definitely worth a visit.

It is the meeting of the city. There are monuments, plazas , arc and statutes and above all there is the smell of the ocean. Just take your time and embrace the moment.

Between the Castelo St. George an the Barrio Alto lies this absolutely wonderful area. From the Commerce Square, go up and away from the water. This is the center of Baixa.

This is the heart of good eateries and the heart of all Lisbon. After the 1755 earthquake, the rubble was cleared away and life began anew.

We found a fantastic Turkish Doner Kebab place here and had an amazing lunch while spending time people-watching. This truly is the heart of Lisbon.

This is a significant part of the older city, so there is a lot here, both good and bad. Don't eat here, but do take in the historic sites The restaurants are tourist traps but the historic city experience is genuine and can be charming. Walk around.

This neighborhood is a central part of Lisbon. It was destroyed by the earthquake and ensuing tsunamis of 1755. It was rebuilt by the marques de Pombal.

Lisbon Baixa is actually a lovely area. We visited several times and walked around just looking and enjoying. There are plenty of restaurants, cafes, bars, fashion shops, souvenir shops, pastry shops and other types of shops, to satisfy all tastes. There are also plenty of tourists but that is exactly what should happen! It is what people want. And we loved the place!

Lisbon is the most beautiful and romantic city in the world !
I have the privilege of knowing some beautiful cities/countries, but I must say and it’s not just because Portugal raised me; no other can be compared with my beautiful Lisbon and it’s warm heart people!

Portugues people are the most warm, friendly welcoming people in the world .
We will “always” have a smile in our faces; go out of our way to help.

I have seen someone going out of his ways asking for help to other Portugues to explain directions because he didn’t spoke that specific language (Italian) !

I went to a restaurant and the waiter asked the chef to make me 2 pastéis de bacalhau and they brought it to the table without me knowing because they realised it’s been ages since I eaten one.. That is the pure definition of Portuguese people!

We treat everyone with respect and care (of corse there are exceptions)! I’m not saying everything is perfect, it’s not !
