This is where Holy Mary appeared to the children on Aug 19th. There is a statue of Holy Mary in the place surrounded by fields with olive trees and cork trees. Continue walking and you’ll reach the spot where the angel of peace appeared to the children 1 out of 3 times. This is where the angel gave the children the Eucharist. There is a statue of the angel and children. You can also see the Stations of the Cross along the walk. The area is very peaceful and awe inspiring. Out of place, but it might come in handy: There is a large restroom building along this walk.

A group of pilgrims and I did the Way of the Cross. It was so surreal as this place gives you the time to sit down and relax and just catch your breath, because the beauty of the Way of the Cross was beautiful. They have several concrete benches and trees where people can relax, or climb up to see the stunning beauty of the city. I had the chance to pray in this sanctuary. One of the highlights of my pilgrimage in Oct 2021.

I visited this place with pilgrim groups from Indonesia. We came early in the morning around 8.30 AM. There were other groups. Everyone chanted the prayer with their languages. Some of them prayed the rosary, some of them did way of cross. Indonesian, Arab, and German all mixed together that morning. Everyone was very thoughtful, waited for their turns in every station. It was very serene.

I appreciate the management of this place, it was very properly maintained and properly equipped with ramps, so people with wheelchair or family with baby stroller can also walk down the Camino.

My tip: Do come early so the place would not be crowded with pilgrims. Please bring some light jacket or scarf, it was quite windy in the morning. I came in early August and the 15 degrees summer breeze was quite cold for a tropical girl like me.

The path up the little hill to the Valinhos Sanctuary is lined with pious images of the Via Crucis. The Sanctuary itself house a small chapel with a scene of the Crucifixion topside. A good place to pray, and also with magnificent views.

We visited this area several times in the past and we went there again in November as part of our Fatima trip. It is an amazing place with beautiful way of the cross set into the olive groves and is also the scene of one of Our Lady's visits to the little shepherds. It is wonderful to walk there in the peace and quiet of the area, and to reflect on what happened there over a century ago.
We intend to go back again in a couple of years and already are looking forward to the experience.

In 1917, between May and October, Our Lady appeared to three children at the place known as Cova da Iria (where the shrine stands nowadays). In August, it was the exception, Our Lady appeared in Valinhos on the 19th (a few kilometers away from the shrine). It is an interesting place to visit and to observe the pilgrims religiosity. Enjoy!

The original fields where the Virgin Mary appeared to the three children in 1917 is now occupied by the vast, asphalted esplanade of the Fatima sanctuary. To get an idea of what the place once looked like you have to come to the fields of Valinhos, either a 25mins walk from the sanctuary or a few minutes by car or bus. A Via Sacra with Stations of the Cross has been built among groves of olive and holm trees. All is quiet and almost mystical in its silence. The Via also includes the site of the Virgin Mary's fourth apparition, and ends at a calvary chapel surmounted by a beautiful Crucifixion scene sculpture. It is also only a few minutes' walk to Aljustrel where you can see the homes of the three children. Try to visit at sunset if you can: the place becomes wonderfully peaceful then and eeriely spiritual as the light begins to dim.

Well worth a visit as a stop-off point between Coimbra and Obidos, and fascinating to see the power faith has for some people.

We felt Blessed that we were able to join the procession to Valinhos on August 19. This was where the Virgin Mary appeared because the seers were not able to go to the Sanctuary. Its a 1.5km walk from the Sanctuary on the route for the Stations of the cross. Beautiful and serene place.

Valinhos is located at the last station of the Way of the Cross in Fatima. if you are in a spiritual quest, you have to do it, especially that all the stations are surrounded by olive gardens that add a profound spiritual meaning.
